Intro to Risograph

Intro to Risograph

During this one day class you will learn the ins and outs of operating a single drum Risograph and explore multiple methods of translating your artwork into Riso prints. This class will revolve around each participant creating several copies of their own 2-color, 8-page mini zine to take home, trade, or sell!

Our first color pass will involve printing a digital image file, and our second color pass will be printed by scanning a collaged or hand-drawn image directly on the glass. You will experiment with different forms of mark-making, color layering, and learn how to navigate the quirks of printing with our Risograph SF5130. We’ll also touch on how to utilize the free ANEMONE Spectrolite app, a great tool for printing digitally.

Further info on artwork preparation will be emailed to attendees prior to the class date. Please view our current Riso colors on our Stencil page.

This class serves as a general studio proficiency for our Standard Risograph Equipment. It also provides a path to membership, meaning that upon completion of this class, you may choose to become a Community Print Member in order to continue using the studio for Risograph projects. Introduction to Photopolymer Printing with Jami Heinricher- February 18 (Part 2)

Introduction to Photopolymer Printing with Jami Heinricher- February 18 (Part 2)

Contemporary letterpress printing isn't always printed using old hand-set wood and metal type. Many designers are printing with thin plastic plates made from a light-reactive polymer processed into a highly durable and flexible printing plate. These plates are mounted on a metal base and used to print many kinds of artwork, including illustrations, hand-lettering, and digital layouts. In this two-part class, we will start by learning what photopolymer plates can do, what kinds of artwork can be used to make them, and how to prepare your artwork for the process. You will have class time for photocopying and pasting-up clip art, drawings, and hand lettering on a letter-sized sheet that will be processed into photopolymer plates for the second class. In the second class session, we will print your plates on two Vandercook proof presses, discuss methods for making photopolymer plates at home, and review best practices for preparing future projects for professional platemaking. All supplies are included in the cost of this workshop.

Instructors are Jami Heinricher, owner of The Sherwood Press, a woman-owned, Olympia letterpress shop established in 1940, and Kelsey Smith of Community Print.

Meet and Greet with Paul Moxon and Hope Amico

We are beyond chuffed to host Paul Moxon and Hope Amico together at Community Print! Paul will be working on our presses earlier in the day and Hope is taking down her lovely Keep Writing Project exhibit on Sunday, January 7. This confluence of printing genius seemed optimal for a meet and greet. There will be snacks and significant print nerdery.

Paul Moxon is a letterpress printer, book designer, educator, and Vandercook press expert. He attended the Evergreen State College, and received his MFA and MLIS at the University of Alabama. He has held fellowships and delivered lectures at book arts centers and universities across the U.S. and Canada. In addition to being the author of “Vandercook Presses: Maintenance, History and Resources,” Paul developed and maintains the vandercookpress.info website and is the editor for the American Printing History Association website. You can find his letterpress work at fameorshame.com.

January 7 also marks the closing of guest artist Hope Amico’s "Keep Writing Project” exhibit. Hope will be present to share a sampling of the monthly postcards and prompts she's printed and responses she's received over the past 15 years.
