Influential Scientific Society Recommends Allowing Experimentation on Older, Pre-Born Babies, breaking with “14-Day Rule” & further degrading the respect for life that all human beings deserve, says Students for Life Action

“Modern day Dr. Frankensteins have moved from fiction to fact in this announcement,” said Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins. “This must be what they mean by ‘mad scientists,’ researchers so disconnected from human decency that they have lost touch with things that should not be done, such as destroying life to satisfy their curiosity.”

WASHINGTON D.C. (05-26-2021) – Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins called news today of calls for expanded fetal research “abhorrent,” noting, “Just because something can be done isn’t an argument for allowing it to be done. This kind of policy undermines the respect we owe to human beings not yet born and further empowers abortion vendors who profit by degrading preborn life.”

Reported by NPR, “The International Society for Stem Cell Research released new guidelines that say it could be permissible to study living human embryos in the lab for longer than two weeks.” They noted that dropping the 14-day end-point concerned some researchers:  “If you don’t have any endpoint, could you take embryos to 20 weeks? To 24 weeks? Is viability the only endpoint,” asks Hank Greely, a Stanford University bioethicist who otherwise praises the new guidelines (to NRP). “Is viability even an endpoint?”

“Allowing research on human life opens hideous doors that historically we have fought to close,” noted Hawkins. “Congress and those leading our scientific communities should end this type of research before it begins.”
