Celebrating Our Crew Mates: A Heartfelt Thank You to Volunteers!
It's National Volunteer Month, and we're shining a spotlight on our incredible volunteers!
This National Volunteer Week (April 21st-27th, 2024), the USS Missouri Memorial Association extends a heartfelt mahalo to each and every one of our dedicated volunteers. Your selflessness and commitment are the foundation of our organization, allowing us to keep history alive for generations to come. Together, we've been able to achieve amazing things this year, including:
- Prepping of the main deck to lay the last teak plank on the one-acre main deck of the ship,
- Restoration and exhibit of the Phalanx CIWS by the USCG, the of the large nautical knot board displaying the historic knots used by sailors worldwide completed by our Saturday volunteer crew, and your tireless and respectful interaction with the public throughout the daily routine and during ship wide events. These achievements wouldn't be possible without the countless hours you contribute with such passion and enthusiasm. From youth groups to seniors, our volunteers cover a wide range of life experiences and skills. Each branch of the military is represented in our ranks, as well as ROTC and JROTC programs. The Road Scholars and multiple community service groups bring a vast knowledge base and enthusiasm to the job. Our regular Saturday volunteer crew works hard and knows how to have a good time in the process. Whether you're a one-time volunteer or you're with us on a regular basis, you can be satisfied in the knowledge that you help to preserve the USS Battleship Missouri’s place in history! We know your time is valuable, and we are incredibly grateful that you choose to spend it supporting our mission. Your positive attitudes, hard work, and dedication inspire us every day. Volunteers Welcome at the Battleship Missouri Memorial
When the USS Missouri was in commission, there were 2,500 Sailors maintaining the ship. Today, there are less than 25 maintenance staff working on the ship. We are pleased and grateful that you are interested in volunteering your time and effort in order to help restore and preserve one of the world’s most famous battleships.
Launched in 1944, the “Mighty Mo” provided gunfire support for the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. On September 2, 1945, she served as a stage for the signing of the Instrument of Surrender in Tokyo Bay, bringing WWII to an end. This day in history is remembered as the start of a new era of friendship and cooperation in the Pacific. The USS Missouri also participated in the Korean War and the Persian Gulf war.
The Battleship Missouri Memorial is an American icon that stands watch over the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Battleship Missouri welcomes visitors from around the world and is conveniently located less than three miles from the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and approximately eleven miles from Waikiki.
By volunteering, you make a difference and help to support the mission to preserve the Battleship Missouri and share her story and place in history.
Types of volunteer work available:
- Cleaning (this is a great opportunity to see parts of the ship that are not open to the public)
- Sanding
- Sweeping up to level 06
- Touch-up painting
- Moving items
Minimum age:
- 13 years old, accompanied by an adult.
- 16 years old, unaccompanied
Attire:
- Covered shoes.
- No shorts
- No tank tops.
Safety glasses and gloves are provided if needed.
Recommended:
- Bring bottled water.
- Sunscreen

Hours available:
- Monday through Saturday between 9:00 am and end by 2:00 pm*.
Please allow a minimum of 2 hours of your day as a volunteer (transit time to and from the Battleship Missouri Memorial is not included in minimum hours). Transportation onto Ford Island takes approximately 30 – 40 minutes: a 10-minute shuttle ride plus wait time. Shuttle busses run between the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and Battleship Missouri Memorial approximately every 20 minutes.
*7-day advance notice to our Volunteer Department is preferred.
Please note that bags and backpacks are NOT allowed. Mobile phones, small wallets and small clear plastic bags are allowed but subject to inspection.
