Last updated March 2024 TNFD in a Box provides an overview for market participants about why corporates and financial institutions need to consider nature as a strategic risk management issues and how they can identify, assess, manage and disclose their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities by adopting the TNFD recommendations. It has five modules covering key aspects of the TNFD’s recommendations and guidance, plus a high-level overview aimed specifically at boards. How to use TNFD in a box TNFD in a Box is intended to support workshop-style presentations. External parties may use these materials (with appropriate attribution) as they see fit to support adoption and implementation. Signposts are provided to material published by the TNFD, including its recommendations and additional guidance. While illustrative examples are provided throughout these materials, they do not necessarily represent best practice and have not been endorsed by the TNFD. They are simply designed to highlight how organisations have approached assessment and implementation challenges with the TNFD draft guidance available at the time. Module 0: Board Level Overview Download module Aimed specifically at boards and users who need less detail, the Board Level Overview gives a high-level summary of all the modules of TNFD in a Box. It is designed to be both standalone, and act as an introduction to the five modules. Module 1: The Nature-Business Nexus Download module This module of TNFD in a Box presents the business case for why nature should matter to business and lays the foundation blocks for understanding nature and business ahead of implementing the TNFD Recommendations and guidance. Our society, economies and financial systems are embedded in nature, not external to it. Nature is deteriorating globally and biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history. There is growing evidence that this poses risks for businesses, capital providers, financial systems and economies, and that these risks are increasing in severity and frequency. This module acts as a guide for thinking about how business and finance relates to the natural world. It provides an overview of the foundations for understanding business and nature and the language to talk about nature in relation to corporate and financial decision-making. Module 2: Overview of the TNFD Download module This module provides an overview of TNFD’s mission and the reporting landscape the TNFD sits within. It gives a high-level introduction to the TNFD’s content, covers the history of the initiative, and the process of developing the TNFD recommendations, which took place between September 2021 and September 2023. The TNFD was set up to help organisations address nature-related issues, building on the pioneering climate-related work of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). Its recommendations and guidance have been developed to enable business and finance to integrate nature into decision making and ultimately support a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive outcomes. It covers the TNFD’s approach to metrics, scenarios, data and stakeholder engagement. To support the implementation of the TNFD recommendations, the Taskforce has created a set of additional guidance documents to help organisations identify and assess nature-related issues and inform their own disclosure. This includes the TNFD’s approach to metrics, scenarios, data and stakeholder engagement.
