Seeing the Problem: Analyzing Representation of Deaf People and American Sign Language in Mainstream Media

Sun, April 11, 12:20 to 1:20pm EDT (12:20 to 1:20pm EDT), Division G, Division G - Section 3 Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

Representation is being closely examined in today's current environment. Representation can both empower or disempower a marginalized group. The U.S. Deaf community is one such marginalized community, occupying a space between the dis/ability community and minority language communities. Educators seeking to select media showing Deaf people would benefit from applying critical frameworks to appraise their selected media product. Using the critical frameworks of Disability Critical theory, Deaf Critical theory, and Crip Theory, a close reading of A QUIET PLACE reveals problems with representation of Deaf people and American Sign Language. From this analysis, educators can learn how to avoid perpetuating the oppression of the Deaf community.
