Listen to the electromagnetic specters of the Charles Library with your very own EMF electromagnetic induction coil. Tune into the electromagnetic sounds of the built environment! Join artists Jazmyn Crosby and Matt Parker on a tour of the machines of the Charles Library. In this workshop and listening tour you will build your very own coil-pickup electromagnetic inductor, grab a risograph printed map, some headphones, and head out into the library to discover the world of electromagnetic noise (EMF) that surrounds us. Hear the library like you have never heard it before! This workshop is suitable for anyone. Equipment will be provided but if you have your own wired headphones, we recommend you bring them along too.

About the Instructors:

Jazmyn Crosby is an interdisciplinary artist raised in New Mexico and living in Philadelphia. She is a founding member of Graft Collective and a member at Practice Gallery. She holds an MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture, and currently teaches at Tyler, University of Delaware, Moore College of Art and Design and Fleisher Art Memorial. Jazmyn has exhibited in Albuquerque, Montreal, Long Beach, Philadelphia, Prague, and New York. She has held residencies and received awards through Concordia University, Pink Noise Projects, the Fulcrum Fund, and SOMOS ABQ. At present, she is an Artist Ambassador at InLiquid in collaboration with Rabbit Recycling.

Matt Parker is a critical sound explorer; an artist researching the resonances between things. His multimedia works are influenced by the practice of listening; to unsound vibratory ecologies and the economies of noise. His research engages with sound studies, media ecology, field recording and environmental humanities through a spectral art practice. He is currently the Gilbert Seldes Multimodal Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania.
