Classical Snack is a monthly feature here at WNED Classical. The goal is to provide tidbits of information about classical music that might enhance your listening experience. Each installment of Classical Snack will be a fun-sized treat - like a little candy bar given out at Halloween. They’ll take no more than two or three minutes to digest. CHUCK BASIL was the Grand Prize Winner of the Marvin Hamlisch Star Search Competition in 2002 and performed and recorded with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been in the music ministry of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo for more than forty years and is currently Music Director at St. John Vianney RC Church in Orchard Park, NY. He is a Fellow of the O'Neill Cabaret Symposium in Waterford, Connecticut. Basil began playing cabaret and piano bar music at the Stage Door Piano Lounge in Buffalo in 1989 and has worked with Kerrykate since 1998. This year marks their 25th anniversary as a performing duo. Basil has also been music director of several theatrical productions in the Buffalo area.
KERRYKATE ABEL is a veteran performer on Buffalo area stages. Like Basil, Abel is a fellow of the O’Neill Cabaret Symposium and has performed across the country in both cabaret and theatre. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts with a performance creation concentration from Goddard College in Vermont. Abel is also a playwright, writer, activist, and educator. In the summer of 2023, she appeared on the Saul Elkin Stage as Mistress Overdone in the Shakespeare in Delaware Park production of Measure For Measure. She also recently played Eunice in the critically acclaimed BUA production of A Great Wilderness. Her relationship with BUA goes back years, having been producer of the BUA Cabaret Series from 2009 to 2012. She wrote and directed Hoarding Hope at the Paul Robeson Theatre and can be seen for one more weekend as Eddie in The Rocky Horror Show at the Kavinoky Theatre. Ms. Abel is hoping to produce her long-awaited next cabaret, Woman Of A Certain Rage, in 2024.

Hear Us Out, a new music initiative aimed at young learners (age 8-12) was held at Buffalo Toronto Public Media Studios on Saturday, November 18, 2023.
Hear Us Out was made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Services, Inc.

Named in honor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s Music Director, the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition was launched in 2004 by WNED Classical, WNED PBS and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. It was the world’s first concerto competition for classical guitarists with accompaniment by a full symphony orchestra. The Falletta Competition was established to help identify and encourage talented young classical guitarists and help them on their musical journeys.
Every two years, it brings international guitarists to Buffalo, New York for one week to perform publicly in competition for cash prizes, a recording contract, national and international broadcast exposure, and a return engagement with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. It is the opportunity of a lifetime for young musicians who have dedicated themselves to their art and who are serious about pursuing careers not only as international performing and recording artists, but also as concert soloists.
In addition to bringing prominent recognition to highly-skilled young classical guitarists, Buffalo Toronto Public Media and the BPO seek to promote music appreciation and enhance the visibility of the cultural arts in Western New York.
Liona Boyd, “First Lady of the Guitar,” received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition in 2018.
On Day 2 (June 7, 2018), the remaining four competitors performed live with an accompanist at the Buffalo Toronto Public Media Studios, and the judges selected three finalist to perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in the Finals.

Bokyung Byun of South Korea is the first woman to win the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto competition. Byun also won the Musicians Choice award as voted by the BPO.
