Culturally Responsive Family Engagement Series with Mekong

This professional learning series is brought to you by the Division of Multilingual Learners (DML) in partnership with Mekong. Mekong NYC is a social justice organization that brings dignity and value to the lives of Southeast Asians in the Bronx and throughout New York City. The organization does this through community organizing and movement-building, centering healing through arts and culture, and creating a strong safety net rooted in community power.

The series of workshops available are:
  •  Supporting Refugee Communities: Lessons from the History of Working with Southeast Asian New Yorkers

Mekong NYC is a nonprofit organization that works to uplift and empower Southeast Asians in the Bronx and throughout New York City. Through community organizing, movement-building, and a focus on healing through arts and culture; Mekong NYC strives to organize, heal, and establish a safety net for the Southeast Asian community rooted in the strength of community power. • Southeast Asian Students and Families: Barriers Facing Refugee Communities in New York City and Southeast Asian Student Perspectives (Thursday, April 18, 2024: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM): This 90-minute session describes systemic barriers faced by the Southeast Asian refugee community. We will aim towards fostering empathy, solidarity, and a collective movement to dismantle the systemic barriers that impede the well-being of Southeast Asian students. We will share different community members’ stories as their lives intersect with education. By actively participating in this dialogue, educators will learn how to create a more inclusive educational environment. We aspire to break down systemic barriers, ensuring that every student has an equitable opportunity to thrive and succeed.
  • Creating Supportive Educational Environments: Resources for Bridging the Gap for Southeast Asian Students and Families (Thursday, May 16, 2024: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM): In this 90-minute session discover actionable steps you can take within your role at the DOE to provide effective support for Southeast Asian students and their families. This session invites you to actively engage in discussions on addressing unique challenges and creating a supportive educational environment. Together, let's contribute to the establishment of a safety net rooted in community power, bridging the gap between the DOE and the Southeast Asian community. Join us for this session of understanding, solidarity, and collaborative action.
