GUEST POST: In the recent election, Californians approved a ballot measure, Proposition 1, that enshrines abortion through all nine months of pregnancy in the state constitution. The proposal was so radical that even a notorious abortionist spoke out against it. New analysis confirms that no one was disingenuous enough to believe that killing babies up to birth was necessary; but allowing abortion without restriction is part of Big Abortion’s evolving business model. 

Even before the measure was approved as expected however, a new advertising campaign revealed a profit-motive for the radical measure. The DuPont Clinic, a Washington, D.C.-based abortion business, announced on Twitter plans to expand California. The abortion group has made a name for itself by offering abortion after 26 weeks, and that is exactly what the group plans to do in California, offering “all-trimester abortions.”  

Abortions into the third trimester of pregnancy, long after the baby is fully formed, involve a three-day procedure in which the child’s heart is stopped by lethal injection and the mother is induced to deliver a dead baby. The procedure carries many risks and women, like Jennifer Morbelli, have died from complications. Mothers are often sent back to a hotel room to deliver the deceased baby, and abortion workers testify to coaching mothers to deliver babies alone on the toilet while they wait for abortion business staff to make their way to their location. 

Late-term abortions are not as rare as people think, and they occur commercially in Maryland, Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico, and soon California. People often assume that abortions occurring so late in pregnancy are the result of serious pregnancy complications, but studies repeatedly show that the reasons mothers seek abortions late in pregnancy are the same as early. The DuPont Clinic’s website states, “We do not require any particular ‘reason’ to be seen here – if you would like to terminate your pregnancy, we support you in that decision.” 

Abortion at any stage of pregnancy ends an innocent human life. However, even people who claim to be in favor of abortion early in a baby’s development are opposed to ending the life of a baby later in pregnancy, especially a baby who is viable, meaning he can survive without the direct support of his mother. 

Pro-lifers found an unlikely ally in opposition to Proposition 1 in Forrest Smith, who describes himself as the “longest-practicing, most highly-experienced” abortionist in America. Smith noted that with the passage of Proposition 1,  “it will be legal for me or any doctor licensed in California to abort up to the moment of birth, even viable and healthy babies.” This is exactly what the abortion industry, now expanding in California wants. Smith writes that “all-trimester abortion care” is “their euphemism for killing viable and healthy babies up to the moment of birth.”  

As anyone with commonsense does, Smith contends that ultimately the motive for this change is profit. He states, “[I]f abortion were legal up to birth, the abortion giant would be able to attract late-pregnant women from ‘red states’ to have their third-trimester abortions in California facilities that would allow it to recover some of the profits it lost after the Dobbs decision reversed Roe v. Wade.” Given that late-term abortions cost as much as $25,000 for a single abortion, the greed-motive does seem to be a significant factor. 

The abortion industry was fully behind the push for Proposition 1, leading pro-abortion politicians in their direction. Planned Parenthood spent $50 million on the political advertising in the Midterms, including a push to pass Proposition 1 in California. California Governor Gavin Newsom spend some of his own campaign dollars to do the same, but new reports show that Newsom and his team were reluctant to advocate for late-term abortion.  

Perhaps that’s because as a politician with ambitions for the White House, he reads abortion polling closely – and abortion through all nine months is NOT what most people once. If you like limits on abortion, you don’t want what the Democratic Party leadership and Corporate Abortion is selling (at a profit). 

A Marist poll this year found that more than 7 in 10 Americans want limits on abortion. Pew reports: “And most of those who say abortion should be legal in some cases and illegal in others say that how long a woman has been pregnant should be a factor in determining whether abortion is legal or illegal (56% among all U.S. adults).”  

Students for Life of America’s Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement polling of the ever more influential Millennial and Gen Z cohort, now about one-third of the electorate, found similar results. “Standing firm in their desire for less abortion, once again 3 out of 4 Millennials and Gen Z want limits with more than 4 in 10 favoring either no abortion at all or abortion limited to the exceptions of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother,” researchers reported, and “(a)n astonishing 8 in 10 want to vote on abortion policy in their states – UP from 66% last year.” 

Newsom appeared to be all-in on abortion with his campaign renting billboards in strongly Republican states that read, “Need an abortion? California is ready to help.”  

Leading up to the election, he urged the passage of Proposition 1. The Wall Street Journal reports, “During negotiations when it was being written, however, his staff pushed legislators to limit the amendment to specifically exclude abortions past the point of fetal viability.”  

If you want to know how radical the abortion without restrictions industry is in California, consider that their proposal was too much even for one of the most pro-abortion governors and a notoriously prolific abortionist. “All-trimester abortions” are a cash cow for the abortion industry; that is one big reason why they are now legal in California.
