The abortion lobby avoids the truth about their business as much as possible. Its latest lie is that Chemical Abortion pills are as safe (if not safer!) than Tylenol. Abortion supporters are telling this tall tale to make Chemical Abortions seem safe. Let’s take a look at why you should be skeptical about abortion industry claims.

Why are they saying Chemical Abortion pills are safe?

An article at Bloomberg claims the Chemical Abortion pill (mifepristone) is allegedly safer than other more commonplace drugs because “it sends fewer people to the ER [emergency room] than Tylenol or Viagra.” We need to dig deeper on this statement to discover why this can’t be believed.

Why isn’t this reasoning sound?

First and foremost, Chemical Abortion pills are literally designed to kill an innocent person. This person is entirely left out of the equation when abortion cheerleaders talk about Chemical Abortion being “safe.” There is nothing safe about Chemical Abortion for the child it targets. But it’s not safe for the mothers who ingest it, either.

The problem with the claim “Chemical Abortion pills send fewer people to the ER than Tylenol and therefore it is a safer drug” is that we truly don’t know the number of women who have been sent to the emergency room because of Chemical Abortion pills. Without that pertinent piece of information, there can never be an argument that it is safer than these other drugs based off emergency room visits. 

However, we do have the benefit of a recent study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, which examined Medicaid records to see what was happening to women taking Chemical Abortion Pill. They found that emergency room visits went up by 500% from 2002 to 2015, a shocking rise that should concern women.

In the report, Dr. James Studnicki, CLI vice president of data analytics, explained: “The safety of chemical abortion is greatly exaggerated.  In fact, the increasing dominance of chemical abortion and its disproportionate contribution to emergency room morbidity is a serious public health threat, and the real-world data suggests the threat is growing.”

Why don’t we know how exactly many women go to the ER because of Chemical Abortions? 

This data is unknown because there is no national reporting law for abortions—how messed up is that, right? Despite the long list of potential complications for Chemical Abortion pills (which include maternal death, permanent infertility, undetected ectopic pregnancies, hemorrhaging, and more), the federal government has not instituted a reporting law for any sort of data on abortions. 

And it gets worse. Not only is there no national abortion reporting law in the United States, but the abortion lobby also encourages women to lie to their doctors about having taken Chemical Abortion pills if they run into problems. (The abortion lobby is in a serious relationship with deceit, obviously.) Instead, if women do have complications from taking the Chemical Abortion pills, they are told to tell their doctors that they have had a miscarriage. 

The tragic combination of having no national abortion reporting law and women being told to literally lie to their healthcare providers when complications do arise is that no one truly has a full accounting of the potential harms of Chemical Abortion pills. This means that when women take Chemical Abortion pills, they don’t really know how risky it is for their health. 

While the FDA is seemingly “A-OK with Injury, Infertility, and Death” from Chemical Abortion pills as Students for Life of America’s Chief Media and Policy Strategist Kristi Hamrick wrote for the Federalist, the federal agency sings an entirely different tune with Tylenol. 

The FDA is greatly concerned with Tylenol risks, calling it a “persistent, important public health problem.” As studies have shown that Tylenol can cause injury and death, including liver failure, the FDA has shown clear interest in protecting Americans by placing an obligatory warning on the label and by supporting proposals which would increase the safety of the drug. But, for some reason, the overwhelming safety concerns about Chemical Abortion pills are never addressed in the same way—leading one to wonder who the FDA thinks they’re really working for: the abortion industry or the American people? 

Why doesn’t the abortion industry want reporting laws and regulations for Chemical Abortions?

An excellent question—if Chemical Abortion pills are so safe, why wouldn’t the abortion industry want that proven by clean reports? Additionally, if Chemical Abortion pills aren’t that safe for women, why does the abortion industry reject regulations aimed at protecting women and reject reporting laws? 

The answer that we’re looking for here is twofold: 

1. The abortion industry knows that Chemical Abortion pills are not as safe as they’re cracked up to be. Otherwise, they would have no problem collecting and releasing data. 
2. The abortion industry has never had the goal of empowering women or keeping them safe and healthy. That’s why they complain about even having to tell women the risks of Chemical Abortion and call informed patient waivers a “logistical headache.” (Give us a break—people sign waivers all the time for recreational activities; it’s not that hard.) No, the abortion industry much prefers making money. If they were to try and protect women from harm, they’d have to shut down, and that just wouldn’t be good for their checkbook and power trip. 

We’re so done with the abortion lobby’s misinformation. 

With every lie they tell and every preborn (and maternal) life they take, the Pro-Life Generation is standing up even taller for truth and life—and that means smacking down nonsensical arguments like these. Let the record show: the abortion lobby cannot prove that Chemical Abortion pills are safer than Tylenol with the current available data. However, if they want to call for national abortion reporting laws to prove it, they have our full support.
