“We understood the urgency of reaching Lubbock residents ahead of the vote to discuss with them what is at stake in a city where Planned Parenthood is actively committing abortion violence,” said Titus Folks of Students for Life Action. “Residents showed up to make their voices heard in support of the preborn, and we believe that the extremism of abortion violence will continue to see bold action like this nationwide.”

LUBBOCK, T.X., and WASHINGTON, D.C. (5-3-2021) – On Saturday, May 1, Lubbock residents voted to make their city a Sanctuary City for the Unborn. Students for Life Action (SFLAction) mobilized in Texas to urge voters to protect preborn children from abortion violence by voting in favor of the ordinance, Proposition A. The voters supported Proposition A by a margin of 62% to 38%.

“This victory is extremely significant because, of the 25 cities that have now outlawed abortion by passing Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances, Lubbock is the first to be home to a Planned Parenthood abortion business at the time of the vote,” said Titus Folks, National Campaigns Advisor for SFLAction. “We understood the urgency of reaching Lubbock residents ahead of the vote to discuss with them what is at stake in a city where Planned Parenthood is actively committing abortion violence. Residents showed up to make their voices heard in support of the preborn, and we believe that the extremism of abortion violence will continue to see bold action like this nationwide.”

In April, SFLAction spearheaded a large deployment to reach voters ahead of the vote. About thirty students from all over the state of Texas gathered in Lubbock to train for two days of door-knocking throughout the city. The Students for Life chapter and the Young Conservatives at Texas Tech University played a key role in boots on the ground activism throughout the process.

Megan Roo, a Student Leader in Texas who helped Students for Life Action spearhead the door-knocking deployment, wrote:

“A Sanctuary City for the Unborn is a city that has passed the sanctuary city ordinance, which outlaws abortion within city limits. This initiative, created by Mark Lee Dickson…  began several months ago when Planned Parenthood announced their plans to bring an abortion facility to Lubbock. The pro-life community of Lubbock quickly took action by proposing Dickson’s sanctuary city ordinance before the city council and mayor. Lubbock’s “conservative” city council and mayor denied the ordinance, so the people of Lubbock, including Mitchell and Katherine Cochran, started a petition. Even though the petition collected thousands of signatures, the city council turned down the ordinance yet again.”

Pro-life advocates did not give up. During SFLAction’s April deployment, students knocked on nearly 4,000 doors and had conversations with Lubbock residents to explain the importance of making the city a Sanctuary City for the Unborn. SFLAction also deployed nearly 20,000 text messages and made 5,000 phone calls to Lubbock residents urging support for Proposition A. Ultimately, 34,260 Lubbock residents showed up to vote on Saturday, and a strong majority of those voted to make their city a Sanctuary for the Unborn.

Students for Life Action is mobilizing pro-life advocates across the country to take steps toward making their own cities Sanctuaries for the Unborn.
