I received a WHO authorized but non-FDA authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine, can I receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine?

                                  • Yes. Individuals aged ≥12 years who have completed a primary series of a WHO authorized but non-FDA authorized, or approved COVID-19 vaccine are eligible to receive a single booster dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Individuals over 18 years can receive Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.

I was just diagnosed with COVID-19. How long will I need to wait before getting a booster?

                                  • Individuals with previous COVID-19 infection should still receive a booster. According to the CDC, there is no minimum time period to wait once you have completed your isolation period and your symptoms have resolved.

I have recently had COVID-19, am I still required to have a booster?

                                  • Yes. Recent infection does not affect the booster requirement. Individuals can receive their booster as soon as they are out of isolation and have recovered from the symptoms of their illness.

My employer requires a negative test before I can return to work after testing positive for COVID-19.

Although testing negative for COVID-19 is not required to leave isolation after completing your isolation period, antigen testing can be obtained through many locations including local pharmacies, our SHaW pharmacy, and other online retailers. PCR testing is not recommended as they can remain positive long after individuals are no longer infectious.

I am a Storrs based Student, how can I be tested for COVID-19?

Our current COVID-19 testing strategy for Storrs based students includes:

                                            • Weekly testing for all students who are not fully vaccinated.
                                            • Testing for all students who are identified as a contact of a positive or presumed positive case of COVID-19 regardless of vaccination status.
                                            • Testing for any symptomatic student regardless of vaccination status. Requested COVID-19 testing outside of these parameters is considered student responsibility.

Personal COVID-19 testing requests outside of these parameters can be located/scheduled through 211ct.org.

What happens with testing when campus is closed due to severe weather?

When campus is closed due to severe weather:

                                            • If you are dropping off and picking up a self administered COVID-19 test kit at the Rome Ballroom testing drop off area, please drop off and pick up your kits any other day during that week - Monday thru Thursday from 9 am- 11 am or 1 pm - 3 pm.
                                            • If the inclement weather occurs on a Thursday and you were unable to participate earlier that week, drop off and pick up your kit at the Rome Ballroom on Monday the next week.
                                            • Please note, tests need to be collected the same day they are dropped off.
                                            • Symptomatic testing will remain open as an essential service during inclement weather, please call 860-486-4700 before coming in for an on-site appointment.

Please note: If you are a Storrs student experiencing any symptoms, regardless of whether you live on or off campus, please contact the SHaW Advice Nurse at 860-486-4700. The Advice Nurse is available to Storrs students 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

                                            COVID-19 TESTING

To keep our community safe and to keep the University open, UConn is employing various methods of testing to stay on top of COVID-19 transmission, preventing outbreaks and reducing the need for large-scale residential quarantines. In addition to testing both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, UConn is using pooled surveillance screening of both wastewater and saliva samples to identify areas of viral concentration even before individuals in those areas show symptoms or receive positive clinical tests.

Visit covid-testing.uconn.edu for more information on our surveillance testing efforts.

There are three types of monitoring:

                                            Wastewater Testing

What: Scientists at the University continually test wastewater samples from areas all over the Storrs campus to detect the presence of SARS-Cov-2.

How: Use the restrooms in your residential area as normal. No further action is required.

Why: Individuals infected with SARS-Cov-2 shed viral particles in their feces even before showing symptoms, allowing us to detect where COVID-19 might be spreading. If a wastewater sample indicates the presence of the virus, we can test further in in that area to isolate cases, catching infections before they become outbreaks and keeping residence halls open.

                                            Pooled (Gargle) Testing

What: Groups of 10 saliva samples are pooled together and tested for presence of the virus.

How: In the comfort and privacy of your dorm room, gargle the solution in your provided test tube, spitting it back into the tube and closing it. Deposit the tube in a designated bucket once per week on a specified day.

Why: If the virus is detected in a pooled sample, each individual in the pool can be clinically tested to isolate cases, catching infections before they become outbreaks and keeping residence halls open.

Exception: In alignment with Public Health recommendations, students with a positive COVID-19 test result in the past 90 days will not participate in pooled testing.

                                            Individual Diagnostic Testing

What: Nasal swabs are tested individually for the presence of the virus.

Why: Routine, random diagnostic tests of the population help identify asymptomatic cases and isolate them before they spread, keeping residence halls open.

How: Storrs students will make a testing appointment through the SHaW Patient Portal and report to the Field House at your appointment time to have a swab taken. You may receive an email from SHaW asking you to make an appointment. In addition, residential students and off-campus students with an on-campus commitment can have five self-requested clinical surveillance tests throughout the semester. Off-campus students with no on-campus commitments can have three self-requested surveillance tests in addition to any testing requested by SHaW.

Exception: In alignment with Public Health recommendations, students with a positive COVID-19 test result in the past 90 days will not participate in surveillance testing.

                                            Submitting External COVID-19 Test Results

All students, including those from our regional campuses, who obtain testing results outside of the UConn testing program should upload their results through the SHaW Patient Portal.

                                            • Select “Document Upload” from the top menu bar.
                                            • Select "COVID 19 Results and Clearance" in the Document Type drop-down menu.

                                            Individual Symptomatic Testing

What: Nasal swabs are tested individually for the presence of the virus.

Why: Diagnostic testing of symptomatic students helps identify cases before they spread.

How: Any Storrs-based student who experiences symptoms of COVID-19 should seek immediate medical evaluation through SHaW before engaging with the campus community. Please call 860-486-4700 for our Advice Nurse line to make an appointment.

                                            QUARANTINE
                                            (Updated: 1/20/2022)

What is the difference between quarantine, and isolation?

QUARANTINE keeps someone who has been exposed to the virus away from others.

                                            • Quarantine is a period of time when a student who has been exposed to the virus is directed to limit their in-person interactions with others. This period lasts a minimum of 10 days after the exposure.

                                            Day 1 - 5:

                                            • Stay in your designated quarantine location.
                                            • Monitor your health daily and submit your Daily Symptom Check.

                                            Day 6 - 10

                                              • Monitor your health daily and submit your Daily Symptom Check.
                                              • If you develop symptoms, isolate immediately and get tested. Continue to isolate until you know your test results.
                                                • Wear a well-fitted mask whenever you are not in your designated quarantine space.
                                                • Wash your hands frequently.
                                                • Do not go to public places where you cannot wear a mask.
                                                • Do not eat in restaurants or other public spaces.
                                                • Do not travel.
                                                • Do not spend time with people who are at high risk from COVID-19

All students should be tested for COVID-19 during their quarantine period on day 5 or later.

The quarantine period is calculated based on the timing of the exposure. Students can re-join the campus community once the quarantine period is completed. No clearance is required.

House hold contacts with on-going exposures will have a longer quarantine period.

ISOLATION keeps someone who is infected with the virus away from others, even in their home.

                                            • Isolation is required when an individual is diagnosed with COVID-19, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic. Individuals in isolation must remove themselves from all face-to-face interactions until they are no longer infectious and are released by their medical provider.
                                            • Repeat testing is not recommended.
                                            • Students who have completed their isolation and have been medical released by their health care provider are able to return to in-person classes and activities. Students should not be compelled to provide documentation to faculty as private health information (PHI) is protected. Students are trusted to communicate their ability to attend in-person activities.

All students are strongly encouraged to have an isolation and quarantine plan.

I am a close contact of someone with COVID-19 and have been told to take protective measures for 10 days after the exposure. What should I do?

Recommended measures depend on vaccination status or history of COVID-19 in the past 90 days.

                                            • Obtain a COVID-19 test and have the result before you leave campus.

I have been identified as a close contact of an individual with COVID-19 and my SARS-CoV-2 vaccine status is up-to-date. Do I need to quarantine?

According to CDC, individuals who are up-to-date with their SARS-CoV-2 vaccine* do not need to quarantine but should follow these preventive measures to protect themselves and others:

                                              • obtain a COVID-19 test after 5 days or more after exposure and if you develop any symptoms of COVID-19
                                              • wear a mask in doors in all public places for 10 days after exposure
                                              • monitor for COVID-19 symptoms daily for 10 days after exposure
                                              • avoid crowds
                                              • cover coughs and sneezes
                                              • wash hands often

Clinical students with academic placements should defer to the guidance of their clinical site.

*Up-to-date with SARS-CoV-2 vaccination means 5 months or more after their initial series of mRNA vaccine, or 2 months or more of J&J or boosted when eligible.

Calculating the Start and End of Quarantine

When do I start and end Quarantine?

Quite simply, you should quarantine for 14 days after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19.

See the scenarios below to determine when you can end quarantine and be around others. For all of these scenarios, even if you test negative for COVID-19 or feel healthy, you should stay home (quarantine) since symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.

Scenario 1: Close contact with someone who has COVID-19—will not have further close contact

                                              quarantine scenario

Scenario 2: Close contact with someone who has COVID-19—live with the person but can avoid further close contact

                                              quarantine scenario

Scenario 3: Under quarantine and had additional close contact with someone who has COVID-19

                                              length of quarantine scenario

Scenario 4: Live with someone who has COVID-19 and cannot avoid continued close contact

                                              scenario for quarantine

                                              SPRING 2021 COVID-19 FAQs    (Updated: 3/26/2021)

What are the current guidelines for out-of-state travel?

I’m arriving to the U.S. from international travel, what are the requirements?

I am submitting gargle samples for pooled testing every week, do I still schedule additional testing when invited by SHaW?

                                              • YES! Try to separate your individual surveillance test from your gargle sample submission by two days or more, but if you can’t that’s OK. It is better to do both tests.

How do I choose a mask or face covering and then use it correctly?

                                              • CDC recommends that people wear masks in public settings, at events and gatherings, and anywhere they will be around other people. Look here for their guidance on selection and use.

How do Storrs residential students get their move-in test results?

                                              • Results are available through a CareEvolve portal, usually in less than 24 hours from receipt of the tests at Broad Institute's loading dock. Taking collection and shipping time into account, most results are available at or under a 24-hour turnaround time.
                                              • After your test on move-in day, expect an email from CareEvolve@lknotification.com. This email will contain a confirmation code and a link to the CareEvolve portal. You will need to confirm your name, birthdate, and UConn's zip code (06269). You will then fill out your profile, entering demographic information.  The Address will be your dorm name and room number, i.e. Keller 303. The exception to that is Werth Tower, where the dorm name was imported into CareEvolve as NextGen. Once you are logged in, click your test date to view your results. For a detailed presentation on this process, click here.
                                              • If you have a positive test result, it is very likely that you have COVID-19. UConn staff will reach out to you to initiate quarantine and isolation procedures to avoid spreading the virus to others. There is a very small chance that this test can give a positive result that is wrong (a false positive result). Student Health and Wellness medical staff will work with you to determine how best to care for you based on the test results, medical history, and your symptoms.
                                              • A negative test result means that the virus that causes COVID-19 was not found in your sample at the time you were tested.
                                              • Unsatisfactory/Tests Not Processed (TNP) or invalid test results indicate an error in collection or an insufficient sample. Up to 5% of tests may result in unsatisfactory/TNP samples under normal conditions.
                                                • Common unsatisfactory/TNP results include, but are not limited to:Unsatisfactory_11: Solids are present in sample or viscosity of sample is too high to process. To prevent this, blow your nose thoroughly before collecting the sample.Unsatisfactory_12: The sample is not sufficient to process because something is wrong with the swab. Most commonly, this is because the swab is put in the tube upside-down. The correct placement of the swab is with the soft tip pointing down toward the liquid at the bottom of the tube.

Invalid: A test that seemed fine and went through the testing process, but did not indicate the presence human material, which should be present on all swabs.

In any of these situations, SHaW staff will contact you to redo your sample collection.

Will I be required to have additional testing for COVID-19 during the semester?

                                              • UConn will be doing random weekly surveillance testing of the residential student population throughout the semester on both the Storrs and Stamford campuses.
                                              • Storrs based residential students will undergo weekly pooled testing throughout the spring semester.
                                              • Storrs based off-campus students with an on-campus commitment are required to submit weekly surveillance tests through the month of February.
                                              • EXEMPTION: Students with a positive COVID-19 test in the past 90 days will not participate in additional testing.

I am a student employee, what do I need to do to be ready to work in-person on campus?

                                              • Student employees working on campus will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 PCR test or provide medical clearance documentation following a positive test result. If a COVID-19 clearance is required, one will be available as a Secure Message on the SHaW patient portal.

I am a Storrs Campus residential student. What happens if I have symptoms or if I test positive for COVID-19?

                                              • Storrs Campus residential students who test positive for COVID-19, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic and students who test negative but have symptoms of COVID-19, are recommended to self-isolate at home.  For those who cannot self-isolate at home, they will be placed in self-isolation in one of the dedicated reserved isolation spaces on campus.
                                              • Individuals in self-isolation must remove themselves from face-to-face interactions with others until they are recovered.  SHaW will provide telemedicine visits for Storrs students in isolation and food will be delivered by UConn Dining Services.

I am a commuter or off-campus student. What happens if I have symptoms or if I test positive for COVID-19?

                                              • Storrs-based students may receive medical care and guidance through Student Health and Wellness while Regional Campus students will continue to be cared for by their primary care providers.
                                              • When possible, non-residential students should self-isolate at home.  They will be given self-isolation instructions.
                                              • SHaW will provide medical support and instructions for Storrs off-campus students who test positive or have symptoms of COVID-19 without a positive test result.

I am a Graduate Assistant. As an employee, what happens if I test positive for COVID-19?

GA employees who test positive for COVID-19 need to:

                                              • Email HR at hr@uconn.edu with the following information:

                                                • Last date on campus and locations where they were

I am an international student. Do I need to self-quarantine for 14 days before coming to campus or attending classes?

                                              • International students living in residential housing will be offered testing when they arrive on campus and again within 7 days of arrival. They will need to quarantine for 7 days.
                                              • International students who live off-campus will have testing available when they arrive and again within 7 days of arrival. They will need to quarantine for 7 days with this testing schedule and 10 days without testing.

What is the requirement for parents/guardians or other family members arriving from states under the travel advisory during the move in process?

                                              • Parents/guardians or other family members arriving from states under the travel advisory are recommended to follow Connecticut State guidance, which includes a testing option prior to arrival.  As a reminder, please note only one individual will be allowed to assist with move in according to the guidelines at reslife.uconn.edu.

What if I think I have been exposed to COVID-19?

                                              • Individuals who think they may have been exposed and are experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
                                              • UConn Storrs students my seek medical care from SHaW at the Hilda May Williams building at 234 Glenbrook Road, Storrs. Please call first! Call 860 486-4700: option #1 then #2 to speak to a health care provider before you visit.

What if someone I know is diagnosed with COVID-19 and I was in contact with them?

                                              • Contact tracing identifies individuals who have been less than 6 feet away from a confirmed positive case for greater than 15 minutes over a 24 hour period.  Regional departments of public health are responsible for contact tracing.  SHaW has been designated by DPH to contact trace UConn Storrs students.
                                              • On the Storrs campus, SHaW will notify students identified through contact tracing. The Dean of Students Office will work with identified students to notify their faculty.  For the regional campuses, contact tracing will be conducted by the local departments of public health.

Will I need to be tested if I am identified as a close contact through contact tracing?

                                              • UConn students identified as “close contacts” are required to quarantine for 14 days.
                                              • It is recommended that all close contacts be tested for COVID-19 during their quarantine period, ideally 5-7 days following their contact.

What should I bring to campus to be prepared for COVID-19 expectations or for general self-care?

                                              • Being prepared for COVID—19 is similar to what you typically need to be prepared for campus life.  A personal, reusable thermometer is a must-have.
                                              • Additional items we recommend:
                                                • Travel-sized hand sanitizer
                                                • Sanitizing wipes

                                                • Non-perishable food items and favorite snacks

I am a residential student, should I have a prepared packed isolation bag?

                                              • If you are directed to self-isolate you should be prepared to remain in self-isolation for 7-10 days. Residential students should have a prepared “go bag” with the following items:
                                                • Thermometer
                                                • Academic items: Laptop, laptop charger, phone, phone charger, pens, pencils, books, notepads, backpack.

                                                • Medications: Any prescription medications you take on a regular basis and any over-the-counter medication you might need.
                                                • Valuables: Student ID, wallet, purse, money.
                                                • Water Bottle

                                              I am a non-residential student, how should I prepare for quarantine/isolation?

                                              • If you are directed to self-quarantine you should be prepared to remain in quarantine for 14 days. Quarantine periods may extend beyond 14 days (refer to Calculating Quarantine)
                                              • If you are directed to self-isolate you should be prepared to remain in in isolation for a minimum or 10 days from the date of your positive test or the onset of symptoms.
                                              • Non-residential students are recommended to quarantine or isolate at home if they can do so safely, but may be able remain in their off-campus residence.
                                              • Students isolating in their off-campus residence should prepare to have non-perishable food supplies on hand to support their period of isolation. Community resources are also available.

What do I do if I have been told to quarantine and monitor?

                                              • Remain at home for the recommended period of time except to seek medical care. This will depend on the reason or timing of the recommendation.
                                              • Monitor your health for symptoms including fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
                                              • Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day to monitor for a fever (100.4◦/38◦C or higher).
                                              • If you develop symptoms, call ahead before seeking medical care, and do not use drop-in urgent care sites or other locations. You may contact Student Health and Wellness to speak to a health care provider at: 860 486-4700: option #1, then #2.
                                              • Practice good hand hygiene with frequent hand-washing.
                                              • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough and practice good cough etiquette (cough into your sleeve or elbow, not your hands).
                                              • Do not share personal items.
                                              • Decline requests from visitors during the quarantine period.
                                              • You can return to normal activities after the quarantine period is complete, there is no clearance process.
                                              • There are no recommended restrictions for other members of your household during the quarantine period as long as you continue to have no symptoms of COVID-19.

What if I need to miss class due to quarantine or isolation?

                                              • Storrs students who need to miss class due to medical quarantine or isolation should email dos@uconn.edu to request support in notifying their faculty when they are unable to attend classes. Regional campus students should email the Student Services staff at their home campus to request support and faculty notification.

Can I meet with a counselor while I am in quarantine or isolation?

                                              • Student Health and Wellness will continue to offer all mental health routine and urgent care through tele-mental health throughout the fall semester.  Visit our Mental Health services page for additional information.

I have tested positive for COVID-19. Do I need to be retested?

                                              • You should not be routinely tested for COVID-19 for 90 days following your positive test.

What if I have COVID-19 testing results from an outside provider?

                                              • All students, Storrs- and Regional-based, should upload all COVID testing results to the Student Health and Wellness Medical Records Department where it will be added to their medical record.
                                              • All students are exempt from COVID-19 testing for 90 days following the date of their positive test.

What precautions can I take to ensure that I am doing my part to keep the campus safe?

                                              • Limit close personal contact and maintain a minimum physical distance of at least 6 feet.
                                              • Wear a mask or cloth face covering at all times when in public areas on campus - indoors, in classrooms, labs, elevators, and other common areas, as well as outdoors when social distancing is not possible.
                                              • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds as frequently as possible.
                                              • Use hand sanitizer after interactions with people or objects if soap and water are not readily available.

Is the dorm considered a “public place,” in terms of the Connecticut state form and not having to self-quarantine?

                                              • Yes, residential halls are considered "public places" and fall under the general restrictions for self-quarantine for individuals who arrive to Connecticut from states under the travel advisory. The exception is for students who are entering a residence hall as their designated self-quarantine space.
