World Languages

New Standards, New Approaches, New Resources

Implementation of the revised NYS Learning Standards for World Languages is a gradual process that begins in Fall 2023 with the first course in Checkpoint A (typically grade 7) and adds more courses aligned to the new standards each academic year. Find out more on the New York State World Languages Standards page and the NYCPS World Languages Requirements document.

March 18-22, 2024 was NYCPS World Languages Week!

New York City Public Schools participated in a week-long celebration for National World Languages Week from March 18–22. This year’s theme is “Learning Languages Promotes Friendship.” Thank you to schools who used and shared these resources within your school community:

Additionally, you can continue celebrating world languages throughout the rest of the year by saving the date for a virtual World Languages professional learning session on June 6!

You are invited to continue to celebrate language diversity and inclusivity by tagging the DOE and @NYCMultilingual on X, using the hashtag #NYCWorldLang when posting (in accordance with DOE Digital Citizenship and Social Media Guidelines).

High schools, start a New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) program as a way to affirm your students' identities and experiences.

Join over 100 NYC high schools in offering this graduation distinction- sign up by 11/20/23.

Learn more about the NYSSB or register for an information session; hear from students here.
