Hello Seahurst Families and Students!
It's Ms. Zike here, your School Counselor! I wanted to create a website to help you to get to know me and the supports and services I am here to provide to Seahurst students and families.
Some services I provide are:
In person, phone or Zoom appointments - Students and families are experiencing greater levels of stress than ever before. Do you or your student need someone to talk to? We can talk about how your student is adjusting to life's challenges and discuss resources and helpful coping strategies. We can explore ways to practice self-care including how to manage any big feelings that are coming up like feeling worried, angry, or lonely. I'm available to talk with parents and students in person, by phone or Zoom.
My Mailbox - Seahurst students are invited to drop a note in the white mailbox outside my office to let me know they'd like to meet (don't forget to put up the red flag to let me know I have mail!) There are many reasons students wish to speak to their school counselor. Often they are looking for support with things such as: making and keeping good friends, coping with strong emotions (worry, anger, disappointment, sadness), maintaining focus and persistence in their learning, dealing with conflict and solving problems, or coping with emotions that come with family transitions such as move, divorce, or loss of a loved-one.
Small Groups- Seahurst offers small groups for students with a focus on social-emotional learning and support. Groups focus on a variety of topics and skill building such as managing strong emotions, friendship / social skills, or coping with separation and divorce to name a few.
Check In Check Out- This program is dear to my heart! It is a short term (about 8 weeks) intensive support to students who we believe would benefit from greater adult connection and attention while working to meet goals around positive student engagement. In this program I meet with your student for a breakfast "check in" and again at the end of the day as we "check out" and reflect on the day. We set and monitor goals in being safe, respectful and responsible Seahurst Stars. Parents receive daily feedback on their student's progress to increase school/home partnership, and students strive to earn weekly incentives for their hard work!
Recommended Home Activities -We will post information for both parents and students here on my counseling web page that challenge us to keep growing social-emotional skills, such as positive communication, problem-solving, and managing strong feelings. It may be a short video, story, or family activity. Check it out and come back often, We will keep adding things to it. Reach out and let us know if there are certain topics you are interested in learning about.
Accessing Community Resources - We will have up to date community resources listed on this site under the Community Resources tab . We are also available to help explore and access other services you may need that are not included on this site. In addition I can help connect students in financial need to resources for school supplies, including backpacks and can often help with shoes, a warm coat and gently-used clothing.
If you have any questions or need additional support, you can reach out and call from 8:00-4:00 Monday through Friday, my Google Voice number to call or text is: 1-541-632-3887 and is the quickest way to reach me.
My Seahurst office land line phone number is: 206-631-4816.
Of course you can always send an e-mail at: carolyn.zike@highlineschools.org.
We will make this year great together!
