Canton, NY – Sophomore assistant captain
Iida Laitinen's team-leading seventh goal of the season was a thing of beauty and ESPN took notice as the nifty dangle and snipe appeared on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays on Thanksgiving morning on November 25, 2021.
The play was rated as the No. 10 play on the Thursday morning showing of SportsCenter. Laitinen's slick score made it 4-0 as the Roos earned a 5-2 win at Neumann University. SUNY Canton is off to its best start in program history with a 5-0-1 record and is just
one of 10 teams in NCAA Division III who remain unbeaten.
Laitinen becomes the second SUNY Canton student-athlete to appear on SportsCenter. Jeffrey Gauld, a freshman on the men's hockey team at the time, appeared on
SportsCenter Top 10 plays on October 27, 2018.
We interviewed Laitinen following her appearance on the "Worldwide Leader in Sports" as she walked us through her scoring play and talked about the reaction from family, friends and former coaches.
The women's hockey team, who just swept the
Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) weekly awards, is scheduled to return to NEWHL action this weekend when they are scheduled to host both Buffalo State on Friday at 4 p.m. followed by a Saturday showdown with No. 4 nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State at 3 p.m.
