2024 Public and Nonprofit Division Awards

Best Journal Article Award

The Best Journal Article Award Selection Committee for the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management is requesting nominations for the division’s Best Article Award, regarding articles published in 2023 (January 1, 2023–December 31, 2023).

This award is an outstanding opportunity to honor important academic work and high quality intellectual contributions to the field. The committee will review qualifying peer- and self-nominated papers, articles printed in the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Public Administration Review, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, and Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and relevant scholarship nominated by journal editors from other top journals in the field.

To qualify for the award, the paper must clearly represent scholarship appropriate to the Public and Nonprofit Division and have appeared in print in a 2023 issue of a peer-reviewed academic journal.  Final determinations will be made by the award committee.

To nominate a paper, please email a PDF copy of the print version of the article by February 29, 2024 to committee chair Stephen Hold at sbholt@albany.edu

The new winner will be announced during the Public and Nonprofit Division’s business meeting at the 2024 Academy of Management meeting.

The winner will receive an award of $500 (USD).

Best Book Award

The Best Book Award Selection Committee for the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management is requesting nominations for the Division’s 2024 Best Book Award. Books nominated should have publications dates of 2021, 2022, or 2023.

Members of the Public and Nonprofit Division pay special attention to how distinctive qualities of the public and nonprofit sectors influence management and organizational processes. Books nominated for the Award should significantly contribute to modern management theory and/or practice and address issues within the Public and Nonprofit Division’s domain of interest. Author membership in the Division or the Academy of Management is not a criterion in the award process. Because of the interest in the substantive intellectual contribution of the book, nominations of textbooks, edited collections, or books of previously published papers are discouraged. The winning author(s) will receive a plaque recognizing the award.

The best book will received an award of $500 (USD).

Nominations for the award should include the author’s name, book title, publisher, date of publication, and short paragraph supporting the nomination. Self-nomination is allowed. Nominations are due February 29, 2024.

Nominations should be sent to the committee chair, Janine O'Flynn at janine.oflynn@anu.edu.au. Committee member addresses will be provided to those submitting nominations to arrange for copies to be sent to all members of the committee.

The Best Dissertation Award Selection Committee for the Public and Nonprofit (PNP) Division of the Academy of Management requests nominations for the Division’s 2024 Best Dissertation Award.

This dissertation award recognizes important academic work and high-quality intellectual contributions to the PNP fields. The best dissertation award winner will receive an award of $500 (USD).

Only dissertations defended during the 2023 calendar year are eligible for consideration and we aim for global reach (ie, PhD theses defended anywhere in the world are eligible).

Nominations should be submitted by the dissertation committee chair or other committee member; self-nominations will not be accepted. Keith Provan Award

Purpose: The Keith G. Provan Award was established by the members of the Public and Nonprofit Division (PNP) of the Academy of Management in 2015 to posthumously honor the legacy of excellence that Keith brought to the field. Throughout his career, Keith contributed high level theory that innovated existing fields, and broke open emergent fields in management and public administration. The hallmark of Keith’s work was undoubtedly his contribution to theory building through empirical investigation. His methods were varied and suited the question at hand, but his work always spoke to theory. Additionally, Keith reached into the best available literature to inform his work, not limiting himself to his trained discipline (management) or his adopted one (public administration) -but rather finding insight from an eclectic set of literature and bringing the best knowledge to bear onto his problem of interest. Future recipients’ work should embody these ideals and contribution.

Selection criteria:  Recipients should be distinguished contributors to the field of Public Administration and their contribution should:

  • Be interdisciplinary in integrating literature from across perspectives
  • Contribute substantially to both theory and empirical approaches
  • Make a unique and identifiable contribution to knowledge in public administration research

Nomination and selection process: All nominations should be emailed directly to the committee chair, Robin LeMaire at rlemaire@lsu.edu by February 29, 2024. Nominations should include a copy of the nominated individuals’ vita and a statement from the nominator. Self nominations will not be accepted. All nominations will be reviewed by the award committee. The committee will review the nominated individuals’ work to assess their contribution to theory, empiricism, interdisciplinarity, impact of work, and stature in the field.

Award:  The award will be given at the Business meeting of the Public and Nonprofit Division at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management. The Division is not compelled to make the award every year if a suitable candidate is not available.

Past recipients: Mary Guy, University of Colorado Denver; Martha Feldman, UC Irvine; Rosemary O’Leary, University of Kansas; Hal Rainey, University of Georgia; John Bryson and Barbara Crosby, University of Minnesota; James Perry, Indiana University.

The author(s) of the winning team and two runners-up will be announced in the Conference program and will receive a certificate recognizing the award during the Public and Nonprofit Division’s business meeting at the Academy of Management conference. In addition, the winning team will be recognized with $500.

All accepted papers are eligible including those that have been nominated or selected for other awards given by the PNP division.

Selection: A panel of international scholars from public and non-profit management will constitute a selection committee which will be responsible for making the award. The Chair of the selection committee will review the pool of accepted papers in conjunction with the PNP program chair and develop a short list of nominated papers for consideration by the selection committee. The selection committee will review papers on the basis of the overall creativity and innovativeness of the research as well as the significance of the contribution to PNP scholarship. Preference will be given to the papers that provide global insights to shared challenges, the mission of IJPA.

Recognition: The winner and the runners-up of this award will be recognized at the business meeting of the Public and Nonprofit Division. All nominated papers will also be invited to participate in a symposium and/or publish their work with IJPA via a fast track.

A plaque and an honorarium will be awarded in recognition of each of the top ten reviewers of conference paper submissions to the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management Annual Meeting (AOM-PNP).
