SXSW 2024

Islands Lead the Way on Ocean Renewables

Description:

Solar and wind comprise only 13% of the grid power, despite decades of effort. Oceans provide a more reliable, predictable power that can help wean us off fossil fuels faster. Leading innovation in this arena are islands, thousands of which are at serious risk from climate change, and dependent on imported fossil fuels. Islands like Bermuda are designing cutting-edge regulatory and financial templates for shifting from diesel to a combination of sun, wind, and ocean. Islands know we need to use Earth's resources together, as they are in nature. And they are showing the rest of us how to do it.

Takeaways

  1. Intermittent solar and wind challenge grid stability, but ocean power is reliable, predictable up to 2 weeks ahead. A green transition needs all three
  2. Islands are surrounded by ocean, with high electricity cost and climate risk. They're willing to take a chance on ocean energy.
  3. These often tiny islands are creating the beta programs, regulations, and structures the rest of the world can follow to make ocean power a reality.
