MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CEO

This has been a terrific year for Vizcaya, thanks to our generous and committed friends and supporters. Visitation has rebounded and our programs celebrating South Florida’s rich cultural and environmental heritage have grown in content and popularity. We also have finally completed the multimillion-dollar program of Hurricane Irma repairs. If you haven’t yet seen the magnificently restored waterfront Barge, Tea House and Boat Landing, please visit us soon. Over the summer, Vizcaya secured prestigious ten-year re-accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, with high marks for our professionalism in stewarding the estate and connecting with our community. Only about 3% of museums in the United States are accredited by AAM and we are honored by this distinction.

This year we have also mounted a celebration of our gardens’ 100th birthday! Designed by the talented Colombian-born landscape architect Diego Suarez, Vizcaya’s gardens present subtropical plants in a European-inspired setting that features figurative sculptures and sparkling fountains. Thanks to the inspiring work of our Horticulture and Sustainability Department, Vizcaya’s unique and spectacular gardens grow better every year. In conjunction with this celebration, Vizcaya launched the Garden Centennial Campaign to raise funds for three projects that will significantly enhance visitor experience. One is the comprehensive restoration of the monumental mural on the ceiling of the Garden Mound Casino. The center panel is from the studio of Venetian fresco painter Giambattista Tiepolo (1696–1770), while the remainder was created by Swiss artist Paul Thévenaz (1891–1921) for Vizcaya. The other two projects are in the Marine Garden in the estate’s southeast corner. There, we are replicating the long-missing gates by renowned ironworker Samuel Yellin (1884–1940) and the four fanciful peacock-topped columns by French sculptor Gaston Lachaise (1882–1935). We extend heartfelt thanks to our members and donors who supported Vizcaya’s general operations and specific programs or initiatives. And we are grateful to County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the Board of County Commissioners for their commitment to Vizcaya’s survival and success. Together we are protecting this special piece of our community’s history, while nurturing the vision for its very bright future. Thank you for your friendship and support!

Joel M. Hoffman Executive Director/CEO

A YEAR OF PROFOUND GENEROSITY

As we commemorate and celebrate five years as a nonprofit 501(c)(3), we are grateful for the commitment that our stakeholders have made through their generosity of time, spirit and financial resources. Our Board Directors, donors, members, James Deering Society, Ball and Preservation Luncheon supporters, community partners and elected officials each played an integral part in making this a year of profound generosity. In recognition of all that was accomplished together, we share with you the following highlights: Philanthropic Revenue Growth: Fundraising brought in over $3.3M—well beyond our goal for the year. New Donors: Increasing our reach allows us to expand our impact. This year, 500 new donors supported Vizcaya with gifts over $100. Record-breaking Events: Our two signature events sold out immediately, together hosting 540 attendees and bringing in over $1.2 million in revenue. The annual Ball and Preservation Luncheon are celebrated affairs of the Miami social season, and are attended by community leaders and philanthropists who value Vizcaya as an educational resource. Growing Community Support: On Give Miami Day in 2021, Vizcaya secured gifts from 77 donors and raised over $80,000. Enhancing the Gardens: Through the Garden Centennial Campaign, we have raised $900,000 of our $1.1 million goal to support three important garden restoration projects. For more information about the garden centennial projects, please visit vizcaya.org/garden100. With bold plans for the future, we need your support now more than ever.

THE 64 TH ANNUAL VIZCAYA BALL

THE 14 TH ANNUAL PRESERVATION LUNCHEON

The November 2021 Vizcaya Ball, “The Party of the Century,” was a tribute to the legendary celebration that author Truman Capote held at New York’s Plaza Hotel in 1966, with guests wearing black and white attire and decorative eye masks. Co-chaired by Jenni and Joshua Coba and Christy and David Martin, the event grossed $778,000. A special thank you to corporate sponsors Terra, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd., National Republic Distributing Company and Funkshion.

Each spring, Vizcaya welcomes Florida’s boldest fashion-forward supporters for a spectacular afternoon of friendship and philanthropy. This year’s Preservation Luncheon, held in March 2022, highlighted the centennial of the gardens and was co-chaired by Eilah Campbell Beavers, Swanee DiMare and Christy Martin. The event grossed almost $500,000. More than one-quarter of the attendees were first-time supporters. Sponsors included Shapoh (Presenting Sponsor), Neiman Marcus, Nexxus Wellness, DiMare Fresh, Terra and Shaw Ross International Importers. THE ART OF CREATING A LEGACY

More than a century ago James Deering imagined Vizcaya—and it became an instrumental part of his life’s work and legacy. Vizcaya has endured as a public museum and garden, a vibrant and dynamic cultural center known for its remarkable collections, immersive programs and the engaged community that supports it. Barbara and Norman Tomlinson were integral members of that community. Their love of the gardens and fond memories of the museum were instrumental in their decision to include Vizcaya in their estate plan. Their desire to ensure that this Miami landmark endure for future generations led them to make one of the largest bequests in Vizcaya’s history this year. “Vizcaya has long been a legacy institution, renowned for its uniqueness and recognized by donors’ commitment to its preservation as a community resource. Barbara and Norman Tomlinson were inspired by this enduring quality to make Vizcaya a special part of their philanthropy during their lifetime and an important part of their legacy thereafter. The Tomlinsons’ unwavering commitment, investment and friendship will be remembered through their incredible generosity.“ — Stephanie A. Mayer, Chief Advancement Officer We invite you to play a role in our community’s future by including Vizcaya in your estate plans and joining our Legacy Society. If you have already named Vizcaya in your will or other estate plans, please let us know so that we can thank you and welcome you to the Legacy Society. Planned gifts provide important long-term support for Vizcaya and its programs, often while reducing your tax liability. There are many ways to make a meaningful gift, either during your lifetime or through estate plans. We welcome a conversation about how these options can benefit both you and Vizcaya. Legacy Society Benefits Include: • Recognition in our Annual Report (if desired). • Personalized assistance to optimize your involvement with Vizcaya. • Reduced tax liability (in many cases). • Knowing that you have made a lasting contribution to ensure Vizcaya’s future. For questions about joining the Legacy Society, please contact Stephanie A. Mayer, Chief Advancement Officer, at Stephanie.Mayer@vizcaya.org or 305-860-8445.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF VIZCAYA’S GARDENS

This year Vizcaya is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the gardens, which are renowned for both their natural and cultural value. Over the past year, we have advanced many initiatives in the gardens and our future plans are ambitious. Roses Return to Vizcaya: Vizcaya’s Rose Garden was destroyed in the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 and the estate remained devoid of roses for nearly a century. Last year, Vizcaya’s horticulture team re-established the beds and tested roses to determine which would thrive in Miami’s climate. Today the space is full of roses that are accessioned into our database and identified by labels for the benefit of our visitors. Living Collections: Our orchid collection numbers in the thousands and is generously supported by the David A. Klein Foundation. We are building our Cattleya holdings—today numbering about 40 different types—with the goal of establishing a nationally accredited collection with at least 100 types. Vizcaya’s Jatropha and Staghorn Fern collections are already nationally accredited and can be shared with other botanical gardens in the region for research and display.

8

Farmers Market: The Vizcaya Village Farmers Market, held in partnership with Urban Oasis Project, grew in magnitude and popularity over the past year. The market now presents almost 30 local vendors selling a variety of products. The market also features Village tours and programs such as yoga, antique car shows and spoken-word performances. During the winter, Partners for Art + Design participates in the market by showcasing the work of local artisans. Garden Centennial Campaign: Through the Garden Centennial Campaign, we are undertaking important conservation of the murals at the Casino and creating high-quality replicas of the extraordinary gates and peacock-topped columns in the Marine Garden. These projects will have major short-term impact for our visitors. For more information about the Garden Centennial Campaign, please visit vizcaya.org/garden100. Garden Restoration: We also are planning ahead for the comprehensive restoration of the formal gardens and recently selected a nationally renowned architecture team to lead that effort. This multiyear project will include resilient and energy-efficient upgrades such as new lighting, irrigation and fountain plumbing to meet the challenges of the century ahead.

ENGAGING THE PUBLIC

Vizcaya is a welcoming and dynamic cultural space for the Miami-Dade community and for visitors from around the world. While the COVID-19 pandemic impacted our capacity to provide tours and programs through early 2022, visitation and participation have rebounded and Vizcaya consistently gains high recognition as a cultural destination.

Resuming Public Tours: In October 2021, we refreshed our public tour program after a hiatus caused by the pandemic, offering four different experiences featuring distinct sections or perspectives of the estate. From October 2021 through September 2022, volunteers and staff facilitated over 750 tours. School Programs: Vizcaya welcomed back students and resumed its offering of complimentary bus transportation and admission for selected Title 1 schools. Thanks to the Janet Traeger Salz Foundation, we launched a new signature school program called “Creative Vizcaya,” which invited local artists to lead high school students in art-making workshops inspired by the estate’s objects, architecture and interior design. Community Partnerships: Vizcaya partners with dozens of local organizations to co-create meaningful programs on culture and the environment for our diverse community. In May 2022, Vizcaya launched a programmatic partnership with the Jack and Jill Foundation, consisting of art- making, live author readings and letter-writing to highlight the importance of storytelling. Performing Arts: Vizcaya deepened its partnership with performing arts presenter Illuminarts. In October 2021, Grammy-awarded artists performed The Turn of the Screw for more than 500 attendees. In 2022, we collaborated with Illuminarts for our annual Participatory Public Art Program, “inYounison,” through which community members attended 12 workshops to write poetry, make music and create fashion for the culminating garden event with more than 770 guest. Contemporary Arts Program: This past year, Vizcaya commissioned Puerto Rican artists Jaime and Javier Suárez Berrocal to create Wish Towers , a site-specific artwork in the gardens. The elegant and environmentally sensitive sculpture opened to the public in the fall of 2022.

11

BUILDING EQUITY AND INCLUSION

Vizcaya was built as the home of one very wealthy individual over a century ago, but it has been owned by and open to the public for most of its history. While Vizcaya’s historic, artistic and environmental resources have long been seen as its core strengths, the organization’s future depends on its open embrace of people of diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. To better represent and serve our visitors and our community, Vizcaya is actively working to advance equity and inclusion in all facets of our culture. Developing Staff: In 2021, Vizcaya began partnering with nationally recognized consultant Executive Diversity Services (EDS) and, with their support, we reconfigured our internal equity and inclusion committee into a self-selecting council. EDS also provided all-staff training and guided the work to include equity and inclusion priorities in our new strategic plan. Creating New Engagement Opportunities: Through the full-time Cordeiro Volunteer and Internship Manager position, generously underwritten by the Cordeiro Family Foundation, Vizcaya is reaching into our community to create new opportunities for volunteer and internship engagement. An important goal for the year ahead is to establish a new corps of horticulture volunteers to immerse in and help manage Vizcaya’s one-of-a-kind gardens.

12

Encouraging Visitation: Vizcaya facilitates an array of partnerships and public programs to attract, welcome and deepen relationships within our rich community. Vizcaya is also proud to offer free or significantly reduced admission through many different programs and partnerships. These include: • Free admission to visitors identifying as disabled and an accompanying caregiver. • Free admission for people receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits). • Free admission to seniors Mondays and Wednesdays through Miami-Dade’s Golden Ticket program. • Reduced admission for visitors aged 13–22 through Miami-Dade’s Culture Shock program. • Free admission to summer camps operated by Citizens for a Better South Florida, Miami-Dade Police Department’s Gang Alternative, The Barnyard, Little Haiti Cultural Complex, Lotus House and Chapman Partnership. • Free admission to U.S. veterans and active-duty military year-round.

13

ADVANCING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Vizcaya’s history has been defined by a passion for preserving cultural and natural resources. In accordance with this history and in response to serious concern about the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise in our world, Vizcaya has an organization-wide commitment to environmental sustainability. Vizcaya is working to align preservationist ideals with our daily practices by being responsible stewards of the environment. There are numerous ongoing initiatives to conserve resources and reduce and compost waste, and we continue to diligently shrink our environmental footprint through practices and initiatives that touch every department. In addition, Vizcaya proudly facilitates public and professional dialogue locally, nationally and abroad on issues surrounding culture and climate. Through the recurring “Climate Collaborative” program, Vizcaya partners with science and social services organizations to address the impacts of climate change on our community and beyond. Noteworthy Sustainability Accomplishments Include: • Reduced water consumption by almost 60% since 2017. • Reduced staff usage of plastic water bottles from 5,100 bottles in 2017 to almost zero in 2022. • Diverted more than 4,000 pounds of material from the waste stream through composting, which is then used in the gardens to supplement the soil. • Donated $1 from every admission on Earth Day to the nonprofit One Tree Planted to plant 850 trees in fire-ravaged forests of Florida.

14

PRESERVING VIZCAYA FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Vizcaya continues to prioritize stewardship with a wide range of art conservation and architectural preservation projects. Hurricane Irma Repairs Completed: With support from Miami-Dade County and FEMA, this year we completed the many repair projects necessitated by Hurricane Irma’s sitewide devastation in 2017. At the same time, we introduced creative mitigation strategies to better protect Vizcaya against future storm events. This complex work included the following: • Restoration of the Tea House, Barge and Boat Landing • Restoration of the Marine Garden • Replacement of the roofs at the Main House and several Village buildings • Restoration of the Café and Shop • Replacement of the air handlers that serve the Main House’s first floor • Replacement of Main House flood doors Village Construction Underway: This summer, we kicked off two construction projects in the Vizcaya Village. The first involves removal of the non-historic former museum structure on the site, establishing a 40’ plant buffer with our Bay Heights neighbors, and renovating the historic Paint Shop to provide horticulture facilities. The second is the renovation of the historic Superintendent’s House, which will serve as the gateway into the Vizcaya Village for pedestrians, cyclists and Metrorail users. Selection of Architects and Engineers: Vizcaya selected a team led by renowned New York-based historic preservation architects Beyer Blinder Belle to undertake the next phase of capital projects at the estate. Their initial work will include the complex project to replace the windows and doors in the Main House with impact-resistant models, which is funded substantially by a FEMA mitigation grant. Barge Herm Conservation: Vizcaya is undertaking a major campaign to restore the fragile figural sculptures known as “herms” at the center of the Barge. Three of the herm sculptures will be strengthened and reinstalled on the Barge, the fourth, which was knocked into Biscayne Bay during Hurricane Irma, has already been conserved and a replica will be displayed. Painting Conservation: Five deteriorated landscape paintings in Vizcaya’s Galleon Sitting Room were deinstalled and sent for comprehensive treatment by a local conservator. National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Grant: Through the NEH Cares Act grant awarded to Vizcaya this year, staff has undertaken several conservation projects in public view for our visitors to observe. These have included the cleaning of two urns in the Entrance Hall and the repair and inpainting of two dragon light fixtures. Work on the baptismal font in the Living Room is ongoing and will be completed in 2023. Dade Heritage Trust awarded Vizcaya one of its annual historic preservation awards at the organization’s annual meeting on April 21, 2022 in recognition of the beautiful work done to restore Vizcaya’s Tea House (right).

WHAT’S NEXT FOR VIZCAYA

In September 2022, Vizcaya adopted an ambitious new Strategic Plan that guides activities for the next three years. Our work is divided into four goal areas: 1. Steward Vizcaya for Future Generations: Vizcaya has begun construction on the next phases of the Village revitalization and it is our goal to rehabilitate seven buildings in the next three years, substantially increasing our capacity to offer school and community programs. The next few years will also witness important resiliency and accessibility improvements at the Main House and gardens and an ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability in our daily operations. 2. Broaden and Deepen Public Engagement: We anticipate expanded programs for K-12 students, a new after-school program that promotes civic engagement among teens and enhancements to visitor experience. Vizcaya’s community programs will be co-created with our community and address its rich cultural and environmental resources. We are excited to continue collaborating with the Little Bahamas neighborhood of Coconut Grove and to launch new affinity groups for garden volunteers and young professionals.

16

3. Strengthen Organizational Culture: Respect for individuals of diverse backgrounds has been a formal core value at Vizcaya for nearly twenty years and our efforts to embed equity and inclusion in all facets of the organization are ongoing. As the Vizcaya family, like the rest of the world, adjusts to an evolving workplace, we will also focus on improving onboarding, training and engagement among Board, staff and volunteers with the goal of fostering ever-stronger connections with Vizcaya and one another. 4. Enhance Financial Resources: The new Strategic Plan emphasizes the importance of continued growth in contributed revenues—continuing the trend that generous donors have established in recent years. Caring for Vizcaya and keeping it an innovative and dynamic community resource is a costly proposition that will grow as we expand into the Village. The Vizcaya family also anticipates a capital campaign to complete facility improvements and grow endowment in the years ahead. We look forward to your participation in our rewarding work to bolster this National Historic Landmark and the community that it serves.
