New York households spend far more than the national average

Hooray for us!

The Labor Department said this week that households in the New York metropolitan area spent an average of $70,875 in 2017-18, which is the latest figure available.

That’s way over the average $60,580 spent by households in the entire US.

You could probably figure this out yourself, but housing in this area ate up the largest chunk of that spending — an average of $27,626 a year.

But New York only spent 12 percent of our budget on transportation compared with the national average of 16 percent.

“Average” figures, as you probably know, are useless because extravagant spending by very rich folks can throw off this number. But congratulations to us anyway.
