Non-Degree Study allows individuals who have not been formally accepted into degree-seeking status at UConn to take undergraduate or graduate level credit courses. Classes are offered days, evenings, and weekends at our five campuses and online.
Students interested in pursuing non-degree study must complete an application. Registration as a non-degree student is on a space-available basis. Credits earned from UConn courses are transferable to most other institutions. Credits earned may also be used toward acceptance into specific UConn degree programs, with some restrictions. A thorough discussion of the program can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog.
Applicants must meet the following requirements to be approved for Non-Degree Study:
- An approved Non-Degree Application
- Non-degree students must have a high school diploma or equivalency to enroll in undergraduate courses.
- In most cases, a bachelor’s degree is required to enroll in graduate courses.
- Non-degree students wishing to enroll in graduate level courses must obtain a permission number from the instructor prior to submitting a registration form. Please note that non-degree students seeking to be admitted to the Graduate School are usually only allowed 6 credits of graduate coursework to be applied toward the degree. - A dismissed UConn undergraduate student wishing to take courses as a non-degree student must obtain special permission to register. With permission, you may take up to 8 credits per semester. Please contact the designated designated advisor of your previous school or college for approval.
- Non-degree students must consult with an advisor before registering if you
- need to discuss course selections, types of programs available at UConn, course prerequisites, etc.
- or need to register for more than 8 credits.
- Non-degree students are responsible for meeting course prerequisites. If course prerequisites have not been taken at UConn, non-degree students must contact the instructor of the course via email and request a permission number.
- High school students may be eligible to take UConn undergraduate classes as non-degree students. Contact the Office of Early College Programs for more information.
- Non-degree students are required to comply with all UConn policies, included but not limited to Covid-19 policies and The Student Code.
