An under-construction housing development in the east valley is committed to clean energy and sustainability.

Independence Planned Community will be a 1,600-home development located near Nellis Boulevard and Vegas Valley Drive.

Solar panels will be installed on each home and are expected to provide up to 75% of the electricity required to operate the homes.

More than 100 homes are currently under construction with prices beginning at $200,000.

The goal is to make homeownership possible for first-time homebuyers.

"The east side, most people don't know how great it is over here, everything is busy," said Tom McCormick, president and owner of Touchstone Living. " I mean you can hear the cars going by, you go to the shopping centers, they're all full, there's traffic 24 hours a day. There's a huge contingent of people who grew up here, who live here, go to school here, who want to stay here. But as you mentioned, so much of what's around here is rental, and they want to own."

The community will include swimming pools, walking trails, barbeque areas, dog parks, and more.

Model homes will be available for public viewing in the Fall.

The development is expected to be complete by 2030.
