James Brady

James Brady

James Brady (Anthropology) coauthored three papers that were presented at the 87th Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology in Chicago, IL, March 30 – April 3, 2022. The first two, “A Further Illumination of Post-Mortem Practices at Midnight Terror Cave Using Paleogemomics,” and “Delving into the Structure of Ancient Maya Cave Rituals: Archaeological and Paleogenetic Insights,” were written with UC Santa Cruz faculty members Cristina Verdugo and Lars Fehren-Schmitz. The third, “More than Smoke: Questions Arising from Incense Burners from Balamkú Cave, Chichen Itza,” was coauthored with Guillermo de Anda from Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) and former Cal State LA grad student Cinthia Campos, now a doctoral student at SUNY Binghamton.

Sonya Lopez (Civil Engineering) was invited by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and The Smithsonian Institution to serve on a panel about “Black, Indigenous, and Other Women and Girls of Color Who Lead in the Science and Technology of Water Quality Innovation.” This panel was recorded for the Water Unites Us: A Celebration of Women and Girls of Color Who Lead in Science and Technology virtual event on Feb. 11, 2022.

Vince Lopez (Admissions and Recruitment) spoke to dozens of 8th graders and high school students who will be first-generation college students during an inaugural Career Day, themed “Planting Seeds for Our Future,” hosted by Dolores Mission School in Boyle Heights, May 21, 2022.

David Blekhman (Technology) spoke on the topic, ”Tapping Hydrogen for Electric Power and Transportation,” during the Twenty-Eighth International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences virtual meeting, April 12–13, 2022.

Elaine Draper

Elaine Draper (Sociology) organized and chaired a session on “COVID Pandemic: Alienation, Inequalities, Mental Health, and Human Rights” at the annual Law and Society Association Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, and presented on human rights, individual choice, and the public interest at the LSA meeting in July 13-16, 2022. She served on the State Bar of California Pathway to Law School Program Advisory Council in 2021-22 and as a faculty judge at the 2022 Student Symposium on Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities. In spring 2022, she organized a campus visit with Heal the Bay’s marine and coastal scientists to speak with students and faculty about environmental research and politics.

William London (Public Health) delivered presentations on “Numerical hygiene: promoting health numeracy in professional preparation of health educators” and “Combatting COVID-19 misinformation and disinformation online” at the Society for Public Health Education Digital Annual Conference, March 25, 2022.

Alejandra Marchevsky (Liberal Studies) was a speaker on the panel, “Immigrant Rights Activism in Los Angeles,“ at the 117th American Sociological Association’s Annual Meeting held in Los Angeles, CA, Aug. 5-9, 2022. The theme for the meeting was “Bureaucracies of Displacement.”

Silvia L. Martin (Marketing) presented a coauthored paper, “The Role of I-Deals Negotiated by Strategic Frontline Employees in Job Satisfaction and Firm Performance: A Dyadic Investigation,” at the 14th Academy of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Knowledge (ACIEK) Conference, June 14-16, 2021.

Pamela Regan, Kaveri Subrahmanyam, and Minas Michikyan

Pamela Regan (Psychology), Kaveri Subrahmanyam (Psychology) and Minas Michikyan (Child and Family Studies) collaborated with students Lauren Rostholder (Psychology) and Isabel Osorio-Flores (Psychology) on a project investigating social connection and mental health outcomes during the first 12-months of the COVID-19 pandemic among Cal State LA undergraduates. The project was presented virtually by the students during the 5th Annual Global Health Conference on Feb. 23, 2022.

Petr Vozka

Petr Vozka (Chemistry and Biochemistry) coauthored an article with students C. Mirzaie and A. Milbourne, entitled “Effect of n-Alkane Addition on the Freezing Point of Alternative Aviation Fuel Blending Components,” which was presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, April 13-15, 2022. He also coauthored an article with students G. Barzallo, H. Gieng and E. Luu, entitled “Quantitative Analysis of Olefins in Petroleum Fractions by Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography,” which was presented at the 36th Annual CSU Student Research Competition hosted virtually by San Francisco State University, April 29-30, 2022. He coauthored another article with students P. Straka, H. Kittel, M. Auersvald and D. Vrtiška, entitled “Hydroprocessing of scrap tyres pyrolysis oil,” which was presented at the 23rd International Conference on Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis, in Ghent, Belgium, May 15-20, 2022.

Jongwook Woo

Jongwook Woo (Information Systems) organized a symposium, “The 2021 International Symposium of Big Data, AI and Education,” on Oct. 28, 2021. The symposium speakers were invited from leading companies and universities to discuss the current and future trends of IT technology and to explore possible collaboration with industry in artificiaI intelligence and big data. Woo was also a keynote speaker and he spoke on the topic of “Scalable Predictive Analysis using Multiple GPUs leveraging Big Data” at the 2022 International Conference on Future Information & Communication Engineering, held in Jeju, Korea, Jan. 12-14, 2022.

Walter Zelman

Walter Zelman (Public Health) organized the CSU Health Policy Conference at Cal State LA on April 19, 2022, which featured an interview with L.A. County Department of Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

Choi Chatterjee

Choi Chatterjee (History) authored a book, Russia in World History: A Transnational Approach, published by Bloomsbury Press, Jan. 27, 2022. The book challenges the idea of Russia as an outlier of European civilization by examining select themes in modern Russian history alongside cases drawn from the British Empire.

Raul Diaz

Raul Diaz (Biological Sciences) along with a team of evolutionary biologists published a paper, “Comparative development of limb musculature in phylogenetically and ecologically divergent lizards,” in the journal Developmental Dynamics, Dec. 19, 2021. The article outlined the patterns of formation of limb muscles in embryonic chameleons and other lizards. The group focused especially on how the unique muscles of chameleon limbs develop relative to a typical lizard, as chameleons are specialized for climbing trees while typical lizards are fast runners on the ground.

He was also a guest editor for a special issue of the peer-reviewed journal, Visual Inquiry, titled “Inflection Points in/through Art Education: Conversations Today and a Look to the Future,” vol. 10, no. 3, 2022.

Gregory D. Stevens (Public Health) served as the co-editor of The Medical Care Blog, the official blog of the peer-reviewed journal Medical Care sponsored by the American Public Health Association, 2021-22. He also authored an article, “‘Protect our hospitals’ might convince Britons to get COVID-19 vaccines, but it won’t work in the U.S.,” in STAT News, Jan. 5, 2022.

Ericka K. Verba (Latin American Studies) authored a biographic and historiographic essay, “Violeta Parra: Her Life, Work, and Legacy,” in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Latin American History, Stephen Webre, ed., New York: Oxford University Press, 2021.

Carmen  Gachupin

Carmen Gachupin (Public Safety) along with the Parking and Transportation Services team received a second-place leadership award in the electrification of transportation category for installing level 3 electrical vehicle chargers as part of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Sustainability Awards Program. The awards honor businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies whose participation in LADWP rebate programs resulted in substantial positive environmental impacts. The awards ceremony was held virtually on April 7, 2022.

Arturo Pacheco-Vega

Arturo Pacheco-Vega (Mechanical Engineering) secured a $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to create a hub for urban sustainability that will advance energy and water research, and expand opportunities for students to engage in intensive STEM education and training. The five-year NSF grant will help establish the CREST Center for Advancement toward Sustainable Urban Systems, known as CATSUS, in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology. Co-investigators on the grant project include Gustavo Menezes (Civil Engineering); Sonya Lopez (Civil Engineering); Jeffrey Santner (Mechanical Engineering); and Yixian Wang (Chemistry). The grant announcement was made on Aug. 31, 2021.

Ann Snow

Ann Snow

Ann Snow (Applied and Advanced Studies in Education) was a 2021 recipient of the English Language Specialist Program 30@30 Award by the United States Department of State in honor of the Specialist Program’s 30th Anniversary. The award recognizes Snow as one of a select group of 30 specialists who have made a lasting impact on the Specialist Program and on the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages field since 1991. She was featured for this honor on the English Language Programs website on Feb. 10, 2021.

Jane Dong

Jane Dong (College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology) was spotlighted by the College Futures Foundation on Nov. 1, 2021, in a video series, “Leaders Driving Change,” for her role in leading the Successful Transfer and Retention (STAR) program at Cal State LA. The STAR program aims to increase transfer student success in STEM.

Elaine Draper

Elaine Draper (Sociology) was appointed to chair the American Sociological Association (ASA) Max Weber Awards for Distinguished Scholarship, reading and ranking 40 books on organizations and work. She was also a presenter of the Weber Book Awards at the 2022 annual ASA meeting, Aug. 5-9, 2022. She also served on the McGraw Hill Academic Advisory Board and chaired Cal State LA’s Faculty Policy Committee for the College of Natural and Social Sciences for the past academic term.

Devika Hazra

Devika Hazra (Economics and Statistics) was awarded a $16,000 Haynes Foundation Faculty Fellowship for 2022-23 for the research project, “Crime in the face of Gentrification in Los Angeles,” during the foundation’s winter 2022 meeting, Feb. 3, 2022.

Taffany Lim

Taffany Lim (Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good) helped secure a $1 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that will help the university establish the first in-person bachelor’s degree completion program for incarcerated women in California. The university is partnering with Chaffey College to offer the new prison education program, an expansion of Cal State LA’s Prison B.A. Graduation Initiative. Incarcerated students at the California Institute for Women in Riverside County will take courses in pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, with an option in interdisciplinary studies in culture and society.

Tona Rodriguez-Nikl

Tona Rodriguez-Nikl (Civil Engineering) was named a Maintainers Movement Fellow for 2022. Rodriguez-Nikl is interested in how technological development will adapt to the changing social conditions and physical realities produced by climate change. As a fellow, he presented a virtual conversation about “Engineering for Long Term Solutions – The Challenge of our Times” organized by The Maintainers and Long Now Boston on June 6, 2022.

Gabriela Simon-Cereijido

Gabriela Simon-Cereijido (Communication Disorders) was a 2021 recipient of the Honors of National Student Speech Language Hearing Association award presented at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association National Conference, in Washington, DC, Nov. 18-20, 2021.

Jessica Morales-Chicas

Jessica Morales-Chicas (Child and Family Studies) and two faculty members from Cal State San Bernardino received a $125,000 CSU Creating Responsive, Equitable, Active Teaching and Engagement (CREATE) Award, funded by the College Futures Foundation, to decrease equity gaps in degree completion by CSU students. The CSU Chancellor’s Office developed the CREATE Awards Program to recognize the important role faculty play in providing high-quality instruction and to help meet the goals of its Graduation Initiative 2025. The award announcement was made in spring 2022.

Petr Vozka

Petr Vozka (Chemistry and Biochemistry) secured a nearly $10,000 grant from the CSU Council on Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (COAST) for a project that will map biodegradation of subsurface oil in Huntington Beach sands. The grant announcement was made on March 25, 2022. The COAST award supports research projects that will aid the state of California by advancing the science of ocean and coastal compensatory mitigation and associated restoration.

Cynthia Wang

Cynthia Wang (Communication Studies) secured a $100,000 Digital Justice Development Grant from the American Council of Learned Societies to support the further development of The arqive: An LGBTQ Digital Storytelling Map. The grant announcement was made on May 25, 2022. The arqive is an interactive repository of geographically and temporally located LGBTQ events and stories that presents narratives of LGBTQ history around the world, foregrounding principles of social justice, diversity, and inclusion through humanities perspectives. The project team includes Zachary Vernon (Art) and John Hurley (Computer Science).

Alexandra Sasha Wright

Alexandra Sasha Wright (Biological Sciences) received a National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award for her project on large scale manipulations of atmospheric humidity and exploring the role microclimate humidity plays in biodiversity ecosystem functioning effects. The award announcement was made on Feb. 14, 2022. The CAREER award is the NSF’s most prestigious award for early-career faculty, encouraging them to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their organization.
