Hurricane Ian closures, cancellations & reopenings: Everything you need to know

As Hurricane Ian approached this week, South Florida’s city and county offices, as well as schools and universities, announced closures and cancellations. The state of Florida activated its price-gouging hotline.

But now we’re seeing reopenings throughout the tricounty area. This report continues to be updated constantly as new information becomes available.

Here’s what we know so far:

School’s back

Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County public schools: All three school districts are closed on Thursday. Extracurricular activities, athletics, evening classes and adult education classes are canceled.

However, all three districts have now announced plans to reopen schools and offices on Friday.

The Broward district added: “In the event a campus is not ready to reopen, the principal will alert the school community by 5 p.m. [Thursday]. Several activities have been rescheduled and those impacted by these changes will also be notified.”

Florida International University: Normal FIU operations resumed on Thursday. Call the university’s 24-hour hotline at 305-348-2277 or visit FIU.edu.

Florida Atlantic University: All classes, including online classes, are suspended on all FAU campuses through Thursday. Classes are expected to resume on Friday. Call the FAU hotline at 888-832-8695 or visit FAU.edu.

Keiser University: Keiser’s campuses in Miami, Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach remained closed on Thursday. These campuses will reopen Friday: Port St. Lucie, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines and Miami. Go to KeiserUniversity.edu.

Palm Beach State College: All campuses are closed on Thursday, but classes should resume Friday. Call 561-967-7222 or go to PalmBeachState.edu.

Nova Southeastern University: The university’s campus and office locations in Broward and Miami-Dade counties reopened on Thursday. NSU plans to reopen its Palm Beach Campus on Friday, adding that “the campus will resume all activities and operate under normal conditions. All students, faculty and staff should report as usual,” according to a university advisory. Go to Nova.edu/hurricane.

Miami Dade College: Classes and operations resumed on Thursday, according to mdc.edu.

Price-gouging hotline

Countywide and other closures

Biscayne National Park returns to normal operations on Friday, including its institute tours, Convoy Point Grounds, Dante?Fascell?Visitor Center and park headquarters. Go to nps.gov/bisc.

Everglades National Park plans to partially reopen certain areas including Shark Valley entrance, airboat tour operators along Tamiami Trail, the Homestead entrance and the Main Park Road (for 25 miles to Paurotis Pond from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.; this area is expected to open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday until the park is able to reopen the Flamingo area). These Everglades areas remain closed: Gulf Coast Visitor Center and Everglades City entrance, Flamingo, Main Park Road south of Paurotis Pond, wilderness and front-country camping. As of Thursday, most Broward County-managed parks had opened. These sites were closed because of storm damage or flood conditions:

Brian Piccolo Sports Park & Velodrome, 9501 Sheridan St., Cooper City.

Easterlin Park, 1000 NW 38th St., Oakland Park

Fern Forest Nature Center, 201 Lyons Road S., Coconut Creek. Nature trails are closed.

Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center, 3501 SW 130th Ave., Davie. Horse and nature trails are closed.

Markham Park & Target Range, 16001 W. State Road 84, Sunrise. Mountain bike trails and target range are closed.

Pine Island Ridge, 3900 SW 100th Ave., Davie. Horse trails are closed.

Sunview Park, 1500 SW 42nd Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Athletic fields are closed.

Tradewinds Park & Stables, 3600 W. Sample Road, Coconut Creek. Athletic fields, disc golf course and horse trails are closed.

Tree Tops Park, 3900 SW 100th Ave., Davie. Gumbo Limbo shelter, horse field and trails, island area (east side of lake), multipurpose field, picnic areas, playgrounds, and walking trails are closed.

Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium, 3700 NW 11th Place, Lauderhill. Park is expected to reopen Thursday night.

All Palm Beach County government operations, including parks and recreational facilities, will reopen on Friday. All Palm Tran services return to regular schedules on Friday. Fixed-Route, Palm Tran Connection and Go Glades are resuming regular service. All Constitutional Offices will also be open on Friday.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County will reopen Friday. Call the club at 561-683-3287 or go to BGCPBC.org.

Broward courts were scheduled to reopen Friday. Miami-Dade County in-person court hearings remain suspended Thursday, but there may be remote hearings “in certain limited circumstances,” said Eunice Sigler, director of the Office of Government Liaison and Public Relations.

Palm Beach County’s circuit courts reopen on Friday. Visit 15thcircuit.com or call the emergency hotline at 561-355-6744.

All Broward County library branches reopened for their standard hours of operation on Thursday, with the exception of the North Regional and South Regional branches, which planned to reopen on Friday.

The U.S. District and Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida reopened its West Palm Beach courthouse on Thursday. Courthouses in Fort Lauderdale and Miami remained closed on Thursday.

Waste collection has restarted in unincorporated Palm Beach County. Residents should place all garbage, recyclables, yard waste and bulk waste curbside by 6 a.m. as usual. There will be no make-up day for residents who missed collection service on Wednesday. The SWA Greenway Trail system remains closed and will not reopen until they can be inspected and cleared of any debris. The Palm Beach Emergency Information Center has been activated, and residents may call 561-712-6400 for information.

In Broward County, Waste Management resumed collection services on Thursday. Residential customers will have service on their next scheduled collection day. Bulk collection is on track except in Parkland and Lauderhill, where it was scheduled for Thursday. Commercial service is resuming and will be caught up by week’s end. Broward County Transit was operating on a normal schedule Thursday, including Paratransit. Most Community Shuttles, operated in partnership with municipalities, are also operating, with the exception of Pembroke Pines, which suspended service until Friday.

The Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office remained closed on Thursday.

Broward County updates by city

Deerfield Beach

Trash pickup: Collections, including bulk pickup, restarted on Thursday, but the city warned of possible delays on routes.

Fort Lauderdale

City facilities: Normal operations, including trash pickup, resumed on Thursday.

Transportation and parking: The LauderGo! Circuit Micro Mover has restarted service.

King tides: In anticipation of king tide impact, Fort Lauderdale city staff placed roadway delineators, no-wake signs and digital signage near vulnerable and low-lying neighborhoods, according to the city’s update on Monday nigh t. Streets in neighborhoods near Cordova Road are expected to be closed to car traffic during king tide peaks. The king tides forecast for the remainder of this week: 12:09 a.m., and 12:54 p.m. Friday.

Canceled: GENVAS’ Café Society Pride, a music salon featuring tenor Jason Antone on Thursday at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd., has been canceled. Ticketholders may request refunds via 954-709-7447 or have their tickets honored at future Café Society concerts in March 2023. Go to Genvas.org.

Rescheduled: At the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Thursday’s performance by Spyro Gyra has been moved to March 9. Visit browardcenter.org or call 954-462-0222.

Hollywood

Rescheduled:

A Wednesday PINKTOBER Dinner at Abiaka in Hollywood’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 1 Seminole Way, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 4. The five-course dinner led by chef Dominique Crenn benefits the American Cancer Society. For ticketholders who have booked reservations, the Hard Rock will reach out directly “to reschedule or provide refunds,” the venue said on Tuesday morning. The Thursday Lynyrd Skynyrd concert at the hotel’s Hard Rock Live has been rescheduled for Oct. 16. Ticketholders who can no longer attend may secure refunds at point of purchase between now and Oct. 16. Visit SeminoleHardRockHollywood.com or call 954-316-2900.

Lauderhill

City services: The city’s administration offices and all Parks and Facilities reopened Thursday.

Miramar

City operations: Normal business operations resumed on Thursday, according to miramarfl.gov/286/Hurricane-Preparedness.

Trash pickup: There have been no changes to garbage, bulk and recycling pickup, according to the city’s website. Residents may sign up for city alerts via MiramarFL.gov/alertmiramar.

Oakland Park

Solid waste collection resumed on Thursday.

Pembroke Pines

Closures and cancellations: City Hall and administrative offices are open at regularly scheduled hours. City parks were expected to reopen on Friday. Go to PPines.com. Crews plan to remove the debris generated by Tuesday’s tornado on Friday. They will make an initial sweep of the area and then return for a final circuit after the weekend. “They intend to have this completed by mid to end of next week,” according to the city’s website.

North Perry Airport: Although about 30 aircraft and a facility were damaged by a tornado that hit Tuesday evening, the airport was able to reopen on Thursday, according to broward.org/airport.

Sunrise

City operations: Regular operations resumed on Thursday.

Trash pickup: Garbage, recycling and bulk trash pickup continue as regularly scheduled.

Weston

Trash pickup: City offices and parks reopened on Thursday and garbage collection has resumed.

Tamarac

Closures and cancellations: The City Commission meeting set for Wednesday was canceled, with agenda items moved to the Oct. 12 meeting. All city board and committee meetings scheduled through Friday are also canceled. All city parks are closed through Thursday. All evening youth and adult classes are canceled until further notice. Wilton Manors

Rescheduled: The final hearing on the city budget scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3. Visit wiltonmanors.com.

Postponed: A Behind the Red Curtain public forum that had been scheduled for Wednesday, titled “Secrets of a Beauty Queen: No Tea, No Shade” and hosted by Island City Stage, 2304 N. Dixie Highway, has been postponed, with no rescheduled date announced. Current ticketholders will be refunded by the theater venue. Call 954-928-9800 or go to IslandCityStage.org.

Palm Beach County updates by city

Boca Raton

City operations: The city of Boca Raton is operating on its normal schedule, with no storm-related closures. All city facilities, parks, and beaches reopened on Thursday. City services, including sanitation, are fully operational. Go to myboca.us/HurricaneIan.

Rescheduled: City Council and CRA meetings or workshops that were previously scheduled for Wednesday have been rescheduled for 3 p.m. Oct. 12.

Delray Beach

Trash pickup: Waste Management collection services resumed on Thursday, according to a tweet posted Wednesday. For updates, visit delraybeachfl.gov.

Closure: The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, 4000 Morikami Park Road, is expected to reopen on Saturday after cleanup. Call 561-495-0233 or go to Morikami.org.

West Palm Beach

Trash pickup: Trash and debris collections resumed on Thursday.

Mounts Botanical Garden will reopen Friday from noon to 3 p.m. after two days of closure. Go to mounts.org.

Rescheduled:

A Wednesday Hispanic Heritage Panel Discussion hosted by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, 300 N. Dixie Highway, was rescheduled for Oct. 19 “due to weather concerns.” Those who registered and can’t attend the makeup date should call 561-832-4164, ext. 306. Go to PBCHistory.org.

Palm Beach County Public Schools’ College & Career Fair, set for Wednesday, was rescheduled for Nov. 1 “due to inclement weather, and potentially difficult travel conditions for recruiters,” according to a tweet on Monday. Country artist Luke Bryan’s concert scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre was rescheduled for Nov. 4, LiveNation announced on Monday night.

Miami-Dade County updates by city

Miami

Closures: Zoo Miami, at 12400 SW 152nd St., expects to reopen Friday, according to zoomiami.org.

Rescheduled: The Wines of Chile’s “Mosaic of Sustainability” event scheduled for Wednesday at Rubell Museum, 1100 NW 23rd St., was rescheduled for Nov. 17. For current ticketholders unable to attend the makeup date, refunds can be requested at point of purchase. Go to Eventbrite.com.

Miami Beach

Closures and cancellations: All Miami Beach OnStage events on Friday have been postponed, while the Miami Beach Bandshell remained closed through Friday. Go to MiamiBeachFL.gov.

North Miami Beach

Trash pickup: Coastal Waste & Recycling canceled its Wednesday recycling pickups and rescheduled them for Saturday. All regular waste services resumed on Thursday.

Parks & Recreation: Facilities and programs remained closed on Thursday.

Library: All services and programs remained closed on Thursday. Library services will remain available online at nmblib.weebly.com.

Doral

City services: Places and services that resumed regular schedules on Thursday included Doral Trolley Service, Doral Freebee Service, the Doral Government Center and all Doral parks. Go to cityofdoral.com.

Boating

The South Florida Water Management District closed all navigational locks at the end of operating hours at 6 p.m. Tuesday. They will be reopened as weather conditions warrant.
