A new dredging plan is now being discussed in a push to restore Tigertail Beach on northwest Marco Island.

Years of storms have shifted the sand beneath the surface of some waterways, causing stagnant water, a threat to wildlife and water quality.

The City of Marco Island City Council voted Monday to work with Collier County to find a solution. It came after a presentation from Friends of Tigertail Beach President Linda Colombo, who warned what would happen if they don’t act.

“Fishing and birding will diminish. Paddle boaters, kayakers, etc., and the health and safety of adults and children wading in the lagoon will be affected,” Colombo said.

Commissioner Rick LoCastro said it’s time to do something.

“That’s sad to hear that we’ve known that there’s been an issue here and the answer was well, the powers that be said this is dead on arrival, that it can’t be done, that it’s too hard, and that’s not acceptable to me.”

LoCastro said the next step is to bring everyone together to make a plan to fix Tigertail.
