CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A health alert has been issued at Jaycee Park in Cape Coral as blue-green algae continues to gunk up local canals. Many residents think the water releases from Lake Okeechobee are to blame for the toxic algae growth. Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers released their ten-year Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM) for water releases from Lake O. They hope the plan will prevent the formation of harmful algae and red tide blooms. Some local leaders in SWFL met with Army Corps officials Monday and think the LOSOM needs serious modifications. Without modifications, our local waters could suffer, they said. For now, health officials are warning people to stay away from waters with blue-green algae and urging people to report blooms.
