An area around San Carlos Island will be under a boil water advisory beginning Tuesday morning for a scheduled a watermain shutdown.

Lee County Utilities issued the precautionary notice to 725 residences and 35 businesses in the unincorporated Lee County area of San Carlos Island because of the work beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The repair, necessary due to previous damage to a 4-inch watermain near Prescott Street and San Carlos Boulevard, is expected to be completed Tuesday.

The notice applies to addresses from 18100 San Carlos Boulevard to the Matanzas Bridge approaching Fort Myers Beach and all of little San Carlos Island area.

Residents and businesses can expect to have their water restored before 5 p.m. Tuesday. Lee County will issue an alert once the notice has been lifted; that’s expected to happen prior to the weekend.

As a precaution, all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes must be boiled at a rolling boil for one minute. Or, as an alternative, use bottled water.

Such notices are made when the water pressure within a watermain drops below 20 psi. To ensure safe drinking water, Lee County Utilities will keep the affected area under a notice until bacteriological testing shows the drinking water is safe with tests normally taking 48 to 72 hours to complete.
