Memorial Scholarship for Professor James MacGregor Smith

James MacGregor Smith was a faculty member in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department for over 40 years. He recently passed away, five years after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He was a prolific researcher; his publications include more than 160 papers and numerous books. Perhaps more importantly, Jim is remembered fondly by generations of graduate and undergraduate students. He supervised countless graduate students with enthusiasm and the right combination of support and  “a kick in the behind” when appropriate. Jim was passionate about teaching and was committed to student success. He recently confided that he remembered a good question one of us asked in class some 40-odd years ago.

Please join us in making a donation to the James MacGregor Smith scholarship fund. It will be awarded annually to an undergraduate student in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department. With this scholarship, Jim’s legacy will live on, and his student-focused attitude will be remembered for a very long time to come.

Note: Our objective is to establish an endowed scholarship and therefore gifts will be directed to a pre-endowment fund. If we do not achieve the minimum threshold to endow ($25K) the scholarship will be distributed for a term of years rather than in perpetuity.
