THE KLIFE NEWSLETTER | SPRING 2022
Dear friends of the KLI,

The KLI is welcoming the 2022 spring term with a constellation of activities, both in person and online. We are looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new colleagues through our public events (e.g., the KLI Colloquia series), which will continue in a hybrid format. Other activities will be held on-site to enable explorative dialogue and peer support (e.g., KLI Labs, interdisciplinary working groups, research and professional development workshops). Our goal is to grow with our communities by sharing what life is like at the KLI through the reports, behind-the-scenes interviews, original essays, and updates highlighted in our quarterly KLife Newsletter. Thank you for being part of our extended community!

Diversity Regained

Diversity Regained: Precautionary approaches to COVID-19 as a phenomenon of the total environment” (2022) is a large-scale collaboration project developed by fellows at the KLI and their collaborators. It is a follow-up of “Diversity Lost: COVID-19 as a phenomenon of the total environment” (2021), which diagnosed the pandemic as stemming from the loss of diversity in the biosphere, the geosphere, and the anthroposphere. “Diversity Regained” proposes precautionary and systemic approaches to proactively meet future global challenges.

Interview

Thought anchors and concept relation games: flexible tools for transdisciplinary collaborations

We interviewed co-lead author Orsolya Bajer-Molnár to bring out a remarkable aspect of "Diversity Regained"— a unique set of flexible methods and tools developed by the team to meet the challenges of short-term, trans-disciplinary collaborations. These tools and lessons might offer important insights for your next collaborative project.

... and more!

In addition to Diversity Lost to Diversity Regained, KLI fellows covered a range of philosophical, social, and ecological issues in their recent publications. To help support our fellows during these difficult times, a solidarity fund has been in effect since the beginning of the pandemic.

The making and breaking of minds: an interview with Isabella Sarto-Jackson

Do not miss this interview! “The making and breaking of minds: How social interactions shape the human mind” is Isabella Sarto-Jackson's latest book on the formative role that the social environment plays in healthy brain development in humans. In this interview, we talk about how the social aspects of the brain and its underlying neuroplasticity have been left out of the reductive, molecular approaches of neuroscience, with wide-ranging consequences for how society understands and treats the youth.

NEWS

EASPLS 2022

The European Advanced School in the Philosophy of the Life Sciences (EASPLS) consortium will hold its sixth biennial summer school on “Dealing with Complexity in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences” at the University of Bordeaux in France, September 5-9, 2022. It is organized by the Institute for Philosophy in Biology & Medicine and the ImmunoConcEpT lab.

Visiting Fellows

We are thrilled to host senior scholar Kevin Laland and PhD student Elis Jones for several months. Kevin is an evolutionary biologist at University of St. Andrews and will be working on Evolution Evolving: The Developmental Challenge to Evolutionary Science. He'll speak at the KLI colloquium on why EDI matters. Elis is based at the Exeter University’s Egenis Centre for the Study of Life Sciences and his project is on understanding the value of coral reefs.

Solidarity with Ukraine

The KLI stands with the people of Ukraine. We have joined the "Global Research Groups Supporting Ukrainian Scientists” and offers support through research stays at the institute for scientists impacted by the war against Ukraine. Read our statement here, which includes our pledge to host scholars impacted by the war. Please help spread the information to those in need.
BIOLOGICAL THEORY & VIENNA SERIES
Biological Theory

Conceptualizing the Environment in Natural Sciences

Biological Theory’s March issue is a thematic collection on “Conceptualizing the Environment in Natural Sciences.” Edited by Gaëlle Pontarotti, Antoine C. Dussault, and Francesca Merlin, the volume examines the concept of the “environment,” a notion that is increasingly pervasive and central to the life sciences. Follow our link for free epdfs.

The Convergent Evolution of Agriculture in Humans and Insects

A new book has been published in the Vienna Series in Theoretical Biology at The MIT Press: "The Convergent Evolution of Agriculture in Humans and Insects," edited by Ted R. Schultz, Richard Gawne and Peter N. Peregrine. The book explores common elements in the evolutionary histories of both human and insect agriculture resulting from convergent evolution.

The KLI is an independent center of advanced studies in the life and sustainability sciences. The mission of the institute is to enable scientific reasoning that can contribute to understanding and sustaining life on Earth in its biological, cognitive, social, and cultural diversity.

The KLI supports research focusing on evolutionary theory, especially in its relation to development, cognition, and sustainability science, as well as on the history, philosophy, and social studies of science.
