Diversity Regained

“Diversity Regained: Precautionary approaches to COVID-19 as a phenomenon of the total environment” (2022) is a large-scale collaboration project developed by fellows at the KLI and their collaborators. It is a follow-up of “Diversity Lost: COVID-19 as a phenomenon of the total environment” (2021), which diagnosed the pandemic as stemming from the loss of diversity in the biosphere, the geosphere, and the anthroposphere. “Diversity Regained” proposes precautionary and systemic approaches to proactively meet future global challenges.

The making and breaking of minds: an interview with Isabella Sarto-Jackson

Do not miss this interview! “The making and breaking of minds: How social interactions shape the human mind” is Isabella Sarto-Jackson's latest book on the formative role that the social environment plays in healthy brain development in humans. In this interview, we talk about how the social aspects of the brain and its underlying neuroplasticity have been left out of the reductive, molecular approaches of neuroscience, with wide-ranging consequences for how society understands and treats the youth.

EASPLS 2022

The European Advanced School in the Philosophy of the Life Sciences (EASPLS) consortium will hold its sixth biennial summer school on “Dealing with Complexity in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences” at the University of Bordeaux in France, September 5-9, 2022. It is organized by the Institute for Philosophy in Biology & Medicine and the ImmunoConcEpT lab.

Visiting Fellows

We are thrilled to host senior scholar Kevin Laland and PhD student Elis Jones for several months. Kevin is an evolutionary biologist at University of St. Andrews and will be working on Evolution Evolving: The Developmental Challenge to Evolutionary Science. He'll speak at the KLI colloquium on why EDI matters. Elis is based at the Exeter University’s Egenis Centre for the Study of Life Sciences and his project is on understanding the value of coral reefs.

The KLI stands with the people of Ukraine. We have joined the "Global Research Groups Supporting Ukrainian Scientists” and offers support through research stays at the institute for scientists impacted by the war against Ukraine. The Convergent Evolution of Agriculture in Humans and Insects

A new book has been published in the Vienna Series in Theoretical Biology at The MIT Press: "The Convergent Evolution of Agriculture in Humans and Insects," edited by Ted R. Schultz, Richard Gawne and Peter N. Peregrine. The book explores common elements in the evolutionary histories of both human and insect agriculture resulting from convergent evolution.
