Congratulations Top Producers!

Congratulations to the academic year 2021-2022 Top Producers! The Gilman Top Producer campaign recognizes U.S. colleges and universities for their dedication to providing global opportunities for American students with support from the Gilman Program. ECA, in collaboration with the Institute of International Education, categorizes Gilman Top Producers by institution size, with a separate category for two-year institutions. ECA is proud to have supported 3,121 Gilman scholars from 52 U.S. states and territories to study or intern around the world during the academic year 2021-2022.

Record Breaking Gilman October Application Cycle!

We would like to take a moment to say thank you to our Gilman advisor community. With your support and campus leadership, we have experienced a record-breaking application cycle this fall with over 5,300 applications received, including many applications for our inaugural STEM Supplemental Award. Thank you for your continued support of the Gilman Program!

Accepting Gilman-McCain Scholarship Applications!

The Gilman Program is now accepting Gilman-McCain Scholarship applications! The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides $5,000 awards for child and spousal dependents of active or activated duty military personnel who receive any type of Title IV Federal Financial Aid to study or intern abroad.
 
Student Deadline: Thursday, January 4, 2024, at 11:59pm Pacific Time
 
This cycle encompasses spring 2024, Maymester 2024, summer 2024, fall 2024, and academic year 2024-2025 programs with eligible program start dates of February 1, 2024 - October 31, 2024. All applicants will be notified of their final status in January 2024.

Request for Proposals:
Gilman Advisor Workshops 

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and the Institute of International Education (IIE) invite accredited U.S. higher education institutions to submit a proposal to host a full-day advisor workshop for Gilman campus advisors. The purpose of the workshop is to build and strengthen the Gilman Program through networking and sharing strategies for supporting students from the application phase through returning to the U.S. as Gilman alumni.

The Gilman Program will offer four advisor workshops at different campuses, with preference toward two-year institutions, between January 2024 and May 2025.

Benefits of hosting a Gilman advisor workshop:
  • Demonstrate the institution’s leadership in international education;
  • Provide professional development on national, merit-based scholarships for higher education professionals from institutions across the United States;
  • Engage directly with the U.S. Department of State and IIE; and
  • Receive recognition as host and program partner in Gilman promotional materials, press release, website, and social media.

Gilman Global Partner Spotlight:
Taiwan

Join us to learn more about the United States’ educational partnership with Taiwan at the Gilman Global Partner Spotlight webinar on November 2 at 3 PM Eastern. This one-hour event will give you the opportunity to hear from leadership as they outline U.S.–Taiwanese educational collaboration, specifically regarding higher education exchange and other opportunities on Taiwan. This webinar will feature key info on the structure and timing of the academic year on Taiwan, an overview of the higher education institution landscape, as well as other scholarships, career opportunities, or networks to stay connected with Taiwan in the U.S.

Inside U.S. Foreign Policy: Global Public Health

Dear Gilman Advisors,

USA Study Abroad, part of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), and its Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program are pleased to invite current recipients and alumni of the Gilman Program, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, ECA exchange alumni, all interested U.S. undergraduate and graduate students, and U.S. higher education faculty and administrators to attend the “Inside U.S. Foreign Policy Seminar: Global Public Health” on November 7, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Eastern.  

This 2-hour seminar will explore the subject of global public health and how the State Department advances U.S. foreign policy interests through its work on strengthening global health security to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious diseases in the United States and around the world. The State Department strives to protect the United States and the world from health threats, by leading U.S. diplomatic engagements, leveraging and coordinating U.S. foreign assistance, and promoting international cooperation at the national, regional, and multilateral levels.   

Attendees will hear from technical experts and U.S. diplomats working with the Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy, the Bureau of African Affairs, and the Global Health Protection Division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at the U.S. Mission to Tanzania. The seminar will shed light on the inner-workings of American diplomacy connecting the State Department’s mission to the lives of the American people. Attendees will also have the chance to learn more about State Department internships, fellowships, and career opportunities.  

 Sessions will include: 

  • A keynote on U.S. foreign policy on global public health: A State Department representative  will discuss U.S. efforts on strengthening global health security to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious diseases.  
  • A diverse panel of State Department personnel, drawn from both the Foreign and Civil service, will delve deeper into the foreign policy process, goals, and strategic objectives emphasizing the ways individuals in different parts of the State Department collaborate to advance country-specific, regional, and global foreign policy priorities.  
  • State Department Careers Information Session: A representative from the State Department’s Bureau of Global Talent Management will share information on the many pathways to careers at the State Department. 
  • Foreign Policy and Career Conversations: Attendees will have the opportunity to move into breakout rooms and hear more closely from speakers and others about their diverse work and career paths.

2024 IDEAS Grant Competition Now Open for U.S. Colleges and Universities 

The U.S. Department of State’s IDEAS (Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students) Program is pleased to announce the launch of its 2024 IDEAS grant competition. U.S. colleges and universities are invited to submit applications for projects to create, expand, and/or diversify outbound study abroad programs and/or resources that align with U.S. foreign policy goals. The 2024 grant competition will award approximately 35 grants of up to $35,000. In support of the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, this cycle will also award approximately one IDEAS consortium grant of up to $50,000 to a consortia of U.S. colleges and universities for a collaborative project focused on building study abroad capacity at community colleges preparing students for careers in STEM, technical, and/or vocational fields. Phase one of the competition will close on Dec. 13, 2023 at 11:59pm EST. Critical Language Scholarship Application OPEN!
Deadline is November 14th.

The application for the U.S. Department of State’s 2024 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program and its virtual initiative, CLS Spark are now open!  The CLS Program offers in-person programs at partner institutions abroad that provide instruction for graduate and undergraduate students in over a dozen critical languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu at various levels.   CLS spark, an initiative of the CLS Program, provides beginner-level virtual instruction to undergraduate students in Arabic, Chinese, and Russian and specifically targets students whose home campuses do not offer these languages.  For more information, please visit: https://clscholarship.org/apply.
