Thinking about study abroad? Receive up to $5,000 (or up to $8,000 if you’re studying a Critical Need Language) to go abroad as a college student if you’re a U.S. citizen and Federal Pell Grant recipient!

Gilman-McCain Scholarship Apply Today! 
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship application is also open! Receive $5,000 if you're a child or spousal dependent of an active duty military member and receive any type of Title IV Federal Financial Aid to go abroad.

March 2023 Deadlines & Timeline

The March 2023 deadline application is for applicants whose programs or internships start between May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024.

Applications are due March 9, 2023 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Take into consideration any time difference as students prepare to submit their applications.

This cycle encompasses programs during the following terms:
  • Summer 2023
  • Fall 2023
  • Academic Year 2023-2024
  • Spring 2024
Student Deadline: Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 11:59pm Pacific Time
Advisor Certification Deadline: Thursday, March 16, 2023

Gilman Advisor Orientations

The Gilman Program will offer four 45-minute orientations to the Gilman and Gilman-McCain Scholarship Programs.  Each orientation will share general program information and include breakout rooms focused on select advisor or institution types to promote collaboration and support across the Gilman advisor network.  These orientations are for new advisors and also serve as a refresher for veteran advisors who have supported Gilman applicants and scholars over the years.

We encourage you to attend any session that works for your schedule, regardless of the breakout room advisor or institution types!  Register for an orientation session below:

The Gilman Program invites a diverse range of advisors from the higher education community to grow in their professional development and participate on selection panels to learn about the procedures in recommending recipients for a merit-based scholarship and attain knowledge on how to better serve their students in the application process. 

Selection Panel interest forms will be available via the Gilman Advisor Portal in February 2023.  All Gilman Advisors with registered accounts in the Gilman Advisor Portal will receive a notification once the interest form is available.

The 2023 "Inside U.S. Foreign Policy" webinar series is coming!

Interested in learning more about how the State Department furthers foreign policy goals around the world? Stay tuned for the launch of the 2023 “Inside U.S. Foreign Policy” series – a six-part virtual series beginning in February that will offer an inside look at how the State Department works to combat climate change, secure the global food supply, foster entrepreneurship, and promote other important foreign policy priorities on behalf of the American people. Stay connected to Gilman’s Inside U.S. Foreign Policy page – where registration details will soon be announced.

Reminder: Confirmation of Program Completion for
Gilman Scholars

As the academic term ramps up and Gilman Scholars abroad return Stateside, don't forget to confirm their program completion in the Gilman Advisor Portal, Recipients tab.  Follow these steps to confirm completion of the a student's program: 
  • Once logged in, click on the Recipients tab at the top.
  • Locate the Actions column on the right.
  • Click on the yellow circle in the student's row to complete the confirmation.
  • Select from the options provided.
  • Press Submit to complete the confirmation process.

the March 2021 Deadline and earlier!
 

Please make sure you have certified program completion for your Gilman Scholars from the March 2021 deadline and earlier through our legacy advisor portal.  To confirm program completion for these students, after login, click on the Recipients tab at the top and Confirmation of Study on the light blue ribbon.  We suggest going through each application cycle to make sure all eligible Gilman Scholars have their program completion confirmed!  If you need any assistance with logging in to the legacy advisor portal, please email us at gilmanadvisors@iie.org.

Yes! The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program e-newsletter, exclusive to Gilman alumni, contains updates and further information on the Gilman Program, information on further opportunities abroad, and profiles of current and past Gilman recipients.

Gilman Scholars are welcome to submit articles about their academic and professional accomplishments when they studied abroad or since studying abroad. Please email Gilman at gilmanscholars@iie.org expressing your interest in being highlighted in a future newsletter because of your accomplishment(s).

Critical Language Scholarship Program Selection Panels

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is always looking for dedicated advisors to serve on the Critical Language Scholarship Program Selection Panels.  Selection panels take place in February and March.  If you are interested serving on a selection panel please contact cls@americancouncils.org.

The CLS Program, of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is a merit-based opportunity for American college and university students that expands the number of Americans who are studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security, economic prosperity, and America’s engagement with the world.  CLS scholars participate in intensive language and cultural immersion programs each summer in fourteen languages. Program participants make impressive linguistic and cultural gains and act as citizen ambassadors by sharing American values and promoting American influence abroad.

Register Now: Webinars on Building Academic Partnerships in Southeast Asia

USA Study Abroad and its IDEAS (Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students) Program invite all interested higher education representatives to attend two upcoming webinars being offered as part of the U.S.-ASEAN University Connections Initiative, a White House Initiative designed to foster sustainable academic partnerships and the two-way exchange of students scholars, and researchers between U.S. and Southeast Asian higher education institutions. The first webinar, “Exploring University Partnership Models with ASEAN Institutions” will take place on Jan. 19 from 11am-12pm EST and provide an overview of higher education systems, trends, and partnership models in ASEAN member states. The second webinar, “International Strategic Partnerships: What Leaders Should Know”, will take place on Feb. 2 from 8-9pm EST and explore strategies for developing sustainable, mutually beneficial partnerships globally, with a focus on connecting U.S.- and Southeast Asia-based institutions. Host a 2023 IDEAS Workshop

USA Study Abroad’s IDEAS Program invites accredited U.S. colleges and universities to submit proposals for up to $20,000 to host one of two in-person or virtual IDEAS workshops in Summer or Fall 2023. The goal of these workshops is to provide faculty and administrators at U.S. colleges and universities with best practices and resources to address current challenges and opportunities faced as U.S. student mobility resumes and study abroad programming is rebuilt, adapted, and expanded. Learn more on the program website and by downloading the Request for Proposals. Proposals are due March 15.

U.S. Foreign Affairs Information Technology (FAIT) Fellowship Program Now Open

The U.S. Department of State is accepting applications for the Foreign Affairs Information Technology (FAIT) Fellowship Program now through February 3, 2023. The two-year need- and merit-based fellowship program, administered in cooperation with The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC), is intended for talented and diverse students in an IT-related post-secondary degree program, including accredited online degree programs. Students selected for the FAIT Fellowship program will receive academic support of up to $43,500 annually for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees, and some travel expenses for the two-year program. They will also receive stipends, housing, and travel allowances for two internship experiences, one in Washington, D.C. at the Department of State, and one at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. Upon successful completion of the Fellowship program and the State Department’s entry requirements, Fellows will receive an appointment in the Foreign Service as an Information Management Specialist. Up to 15 student applicants are chosen annually in a competitive selection process, with special consideration given to those with financial need.
