Gilman International Scholarship (Gilman) Program is pleased to announce that the students who applied for awards for the October 2023 Deadline application cycle are receiving official notifications today! More than 5,000 students applied for approximately 1,700 awards. The new Gilman awardees, coming from over 500 U.S. higher education institutions in 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, will study in more than 90 countries. Awards include the Gilman Scholarship, Gilman-McCain Scholarship, Gilman-IIE Scholarships, and Gilman Scholars receive support from the governments of Germany, through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), France, New Zealand, Israel, and Wales, as well as the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) in Portugal and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO). Additionally, there are 90 recipients of the Critical Need Language Award and 50 of the new STEM Supplemental Award, which supports selected Gilman Scholars to conduct STEM-related research abroad as part of their overseas program.

By the end of today, Gilman advisors may view the status of Gilman applicants from their institution in the Gilman Advisor Portal, under the Recipients tab, including award amount. Please note that the list of Gilman recipients will also be available soon on the Gilman website and only reflects those who agreed to have their names published online.

We want to thank the nearly 200 college and university representatives who served as selection panelists this cycle. The contributions of the higher education community are deeply appreciated. Campuses promote the Gilman Program with their students, often hold Gilman application and writing workshops, review and approve applications, as well as volunteer to serve on selection panels.

For any questions, please feel free to contact us at gilmanadvisors@iie.org or 1-800-852-2141, Ext. 2.

Best regards,

The Gilman Team

Gilman 20 Year Impact Study

In honor of International Education Week and debut of the comprehensive 20 Year Impact Report going live, the Gilman Program hosted a panel discussion the 20 Year Impact Report discussing the report and promoting international exchange on your campuses. Check out the recording if you missed it!

The 20 year impact study (abridged version and comprehensive report) highlights the value of the Gilman Program in providing global opportunities that open academic and professional doors, and the impact that these opportunities have on not only the Gilman scholars, but on their communities back in the United States, among other key findings. It also highlights the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ (ECA) commitment to ensuring that American students with limited financial means and from all backgrounds participate in international exchange, fostering mutual understanding and developing critical skills that support our economic prosperity and U.S. national security.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program Survey

The U.S. Department of State's Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program is entirely driven by U.S. institution’s internationalization needs. The S-I-R Program benefits institutions through support to bring an international scholar to your institution for a semester or full year. Institutions may apply to host scholars in disciplines that would benefit from a comparative or international perspective. The Fulbright Program provides J-visa sponsorship, travel, and modest living stipends to scholars who enhance internationalization efforts at diverse U.S. institutions through:
  • Teaching courses
  • Curriculum development
  • Guest lecturing
  • Cross-campus activities
  • Developing exchange partnerships
  • Community engagement
To expand the number and diversity of host institutions and better support potential applicants, we have opened an institutional interest survey to gather information about how to address your interests and needs, provide application assistance, and strengthen your ability to submit a successful S-I-R proposal in the 2025-2026 application cycle or in the future. We strongly encourage you to complete this survey as soon as possible and no later than December 15, 2023.

Register to attend our upcoming live webinar on January 26, 2024, at 2:00pm EST.
