As we approach the end of our first semester with most of us back on campus, we do so with a focus on our students, our employees, and our community. Leading into winter recess is often a time of celebration, reflection, and remembering. We are all coming through a time of considerable change, which for some, warrants taking the time to remember, reflect, or even be joyous. In promoting a culture of inclusivity, I encourage every member of the Titan community to educate themselves on the various customs, traditions, and holidays honored during this time, and with this knowledge, make a concerted effort to plan winter celebrations that encompass the many beliefs, customs, and cultures represented among our campus community members. So, when planning your holiday or end of semester celebrations, please remember our campus values of equity, social justice, and, particularly, in this case – inclusivity. To get you started, I recommend the article below to help in your efforts to plan culturally inclusive celebrations.

DIEP Fall 2021 Recap

In an effort to support an equitable and inclusive return to campus operations this semester, the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Programs introduced new programs and brought back some crowd favorites. We thank the Titan Family for remaining engaged and dedicated to diversity, inclusion and equity while navigating our return to campus.

Sept. 23-24: Staff Development Conference

While our faculty and administrators serve key roles on campus, the staff truly represent the heartbeat of Cal State Fullerton. As part of our ongoing mission to support staff, Cal State Fullerton held its inaugural staff development conference. This two day conference saw more than 300 registrants engage in topics like leadership, wellness, and diversity. Thank you again to all our speakers, presenters, and partners for making this idea a reality. Here is what some attendees had to say about the conference:

"I have never been to a retreat/conference where the session context actually felt like a retreat. The keynote was motivational and provided practical tips toward professional development. The self care session was nurturing and transformative. The culture of the campus can begin to shift upward (prof development) and inward (culture of care) as a result of this conference" - Staff Development Conference attendee

"I enjoyed this personal development so much and so happy there's going to be a staff development center on campus!" - Staff Development Conference attendee
Staff were invited to a Power Lunch in between conference sessions. Thank you to all who volunteered.

Keynote speaker Derek Young discussing the formation of leadership identity specifically to diversity, equity, and inclusion work on Sept. 23.

Oct. 22: Staff Development Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Similar to the Staff Development Conference, the Staff Development Center was developed around the concepts of diversity, leadership, and wellness. Titan Staff are invited to reserve space in the SDC by filling out the SDC Reservation Form and take a tour of the space by contacting diversity@fullerton.edu.

One Book, One CSUF events

As part of our campus one read program, the DIEP office in partnership with the Asian American and Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Association held its One Book Fall Launch event, Beyond They Called Us Enemy. This event saw more than 200 participants who collectively explored the book’s themes including the dark history of Japanese American internment. This event represents one of many campus engagement activities related to the One Book common read. Later in the semester, Dr. Kira LeeKeenan facilitated the discussion "Using Graphic Memoirs to Support Inquiries Into Issues of Social Justice." Stay tuned for more programming in the Spring.

Don’t miss your next opportunity to engage in dialogue about They Called Us Enemy with our next session facilitated by poet, essayist, and cultural critic Tiffany Babb.
