  1. Global companies are leading the fight against climate change.  Big corporates purchased a record 19.5 gigawatts of renewable energy in 2019, up 40% from the year before.
  2. Amazon with $280 billion in revenue will meet its Paris Climate goals early by going to net zero carbon by 2040, 80% renewable energy by 2024 (100% by 2030), and 50% of shipping going to net zero carbon by 2030. It has committed $100 million for reforestation and made the largest order of electric vehicles ever (100,000 delivery vans). Amazon already has 66 renewable energy projects with 1.3 GW (1,300 megawatts) of energy generation capacity, enough to power 900,000 homes.  Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recently announced he is committing $10 billion to fight climate change, which he calls "the biggest threat to our planet.” Is Amazon setting up to lead the Clean Power Revolution?
  3. Walmart, the biggest company in the world with over $500 billion in revenue and 2.2 million employees, pledged it will be at 50% renewable powered operations by 2025, zero waste to landfills from operations in the US, UK, Canada and Japan by 2025, and sustainable sourcing of meat, fish, crops, coffee, and other products. Walmart currently has 145 megawatts of on-site solar capacity and 850 megawatts of wind and solar capacity overall.  The company also conserves one acre of land for every acre occupied by one of its US stores (currently 1.4 million acres conserved).
  4. Royal Dutch Shell aims to have net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations, categories known as Scope One and Two, by 2050. It also intends to reduce the carbon footprint of the energy products it sells to customers, Scope Three emissions, by around 30% by 2035 and 65% by 2050. To achieve this, the company will sell products with lower carbon intensity, such as renewable power, biofuels and hydrogen.  The energy giant is following in the footsteps of its peers BP Plc and Repsol SA, which have already set similar targets to transform themselves into “energy companies”, not just oil companies.
  5. Microsoft plans to be carbon negative by 2030. Google has been carbon neutral since 2007 and has matched 100% of its energy usage with renewable energy purchases three years in a row. Facebook will reach 100% renewable energy in 2020. What are you planning to do?
