Common Ground Partnership Year in Review

As we begin an exciting new school year, let’s take a look at accomplishments of the 2021-2022 school year. While the pandemic continues to impact each school system’s ability to seek assistance from community partners for the betterment of all students, Common Ground Partners experienced an increase in the number of Speaker Series requests and found ways to connect with educators seeking the Purple Star Award designation. In all, there are now 200 Purple Star Schools and nine Purple Star Districts which have made a special commitment to meet the needs of military-connected children. The Common Ground Compact document was renewed to include additional partners, now providing support from 18 government, military and community-based organizations.

Military Signing Week events further expanded Common Ground’s positive educational impact, encouraging high schools and career and technical education centers to highlight career exploration by recognizing students making a special commitment to serve upon graduation. During the week of April 25, 2022, through April 29, 2022, more than 22 schools participated in local events, inviting community leaders, veterans, school staff, family members, and students to participate. Honorable guest speaker appearances at these events included Governor Jim Justice at James Monroe High School in Monroe County, and former Adjutant General James Hoyer at University High School in Monongalia County.

This Summer, school staff from across the state traveled to the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center to attend the Student Success Summit. Many partner representatives participated in an informative session providing a comprehensive overview of Common Ground Partnership activities, including mention of a few plans for the future. A video of the session is available for your review at https://wvde.us/certification/military-partnerships-common-ground/.
If this is your first year serving in a West Virginia Purple Star School as a Military Family Point of Contact or if you would like a refresher with updates, this video serves as a wonderful summary of the partnership’s resources and activities.

Opportunities for School Year 2022-2023

Common Ground Partnership Webinar Series

Important goals of the Purple Star Award and this newsletter are to ensure Military Family Points of Contact and school staff receive information about the wide variety of resources that military partners have to offer schools and best practices for supporting military-connected children. To provide useful and informative professional development, Common Ground Partners will offer the following series of webinars via the Microsoft Teams online platform. No event registration is required, simply click on each individual session’s name below to join the meeting at the appropriate time.

National Convening of Schools and Communities for the Purple Star Award

The Purple Star Award in West Virginia is one example coming from a growing educational movement of national significance, as similar programs have been established in more than 40 states within the course of only five years. Thus, a national online conference is being planned to occur on the Day of the Deployed, November 26, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. eastern time. The conference’s theme is, “Connecting and Empowering Parents, Schools, & Communities to Build Resiliency for Military-connected Youth.” While this event is not being organized and provided by West Virginia Common Ground Partners, West Virginia school staff for grades preschool to 12th grade are invited to participate, learn and share ideas.

Those who are available to attend and participate via the Zoom platform will hear about strategies being used in other states from across the nation to meet the needs of military-connected children. This event is expected to be the first in a series of annual events where stakeholders will come together to share successes, lessons learned and improve the overall effectiveness of programs at the state, district, and local levels. To register for the event, please click here.

Careers in the Military Website

A new website for career exploration has arrived including extensive alignment with the ASVAB Career Exploration Program. The Careers in the Military website allows students to review information about 272 careers found in the military and identify which branches of service offer those specific opportunities. The guided exploration section asks students a variety of questions and their answers reveal which jobs sets best align with their interests. Moreover, students who have taken the ASVAB can determine precisely how their scores impact eligibility for those jobs in the military. The website also includes basic enlistment requirements for each branch of service, information about military pay and videos providing reasons to consider careers in the military.

West Virginia National Guard (WVNG) Office of Family Programs Launches
Educator Care Package Initiative

Fall marks the launch of an important new endeavor. Beginning on October 3, 2022, as elementary school staff learn that students are experiencing deployments or transitions due to active-duty military orders, they may use an online system on the Common Ground Partnership’s website to request that a care package be mailed to the school from the WVNG Office of Family Programs. Contents of these care packages are designed to offer strategies, resources and contacts who can help school staff assist these students and their families. These packages will be sent by request on a first-come first-serve basis and are contingent upon the availability of funds.

To request care packages provided by the WVNG Office of Family Programs, school staff may click here. While the care packages are presently only available for school staff at elementary grade levels (grades K-6), in months to come, there are plans to expand this offering to secondary schools (grades 7-12). Details on potential expansion may become available in upcoming issues of the Purple Star Informer, so be sure to keep an eye on this resource.

Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Seeking Partners in West Virginia Schools

  and

Commander Christopher McCurry, Commanding Officer of Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Pittsburgh, is looking to partner with high school educators in Barbour, Brooke, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Hancock, Harrison, Lewis, Marion, Marshall, Monongalia, Ohio, Preston, Ritchie, Taylor, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, and Wetzel Counties.

NTAG Pittsburgh offers free SeaPerch STEM kits on a limited basis. SeaPerch is an integrated STEM education program that engages students and educators through a real-world engineering design project oriented around building an underwater remotely-operated vehicle called a SeaPerch. The program guides students through building an underwater robot while supplying educators with the tools and training to help them through the process. SeaPerch is a creation of RoboNation, a nonprofit organization which describes its mission as providing a pathway of hands-on educational experiences that empower students to find innovative solutions to global challenges. The NTAG’s vision, with this pilot program, is to assign a Navy Mentor to each team to aid in the construction, testing and completion of each project. The mentors are experienced in all areas of the project to overcome any obstacle that your students may encounter, thus providing the students real time problem solving.

The STEM kits are available contingent upon the availability of kits and Sailors in the area. There may also be opportunities for schools partnering with the Navy to participate in competitive activities with other schools in the region. If you are interested in collaborating with Commander Christopher McCurry, please contact his SeaPerch coordinator, Chief Bryan Esarey, 1-412-266-4266 or e-mail bryan.a.esarey.mil@us.navy.mil.

Spotlight on the Classroom

Saint Albans High School - Fallen Red Dragons Website

During the 2021-2022 school year, Kanawha County Schools set a goal to become a Purple Star District. During that time, a social studies teacher at St. Albans High School identified an excellent way to engage students in conversations about veterans who honorably served their country and came from the local community. Mr. Greg Ward and his 12th grade students conducted research and collaborated to create the Fallen Red Dragons website at https://sahsveterans.weebly.com. This website is a wonderful example of connecting course objectives to celebrate the lives of those who honorably gave their lives in defense of our country. Be sure to review these amazing stories and consider ways of connecting the things your students are learning to skills used in the military or the heroism and public service military service members display on a regular basis.

Share Your Best Practices

If your school or a staff member within your school is engaged in exemplary practices relating to education and the military and you would like to share pictures with a brief summary for our spotlight on the classroom section of the newsletter, please send a message to Mr. Robert Mellace at rmellace@k12.wv.us. Please follow all state and county guidelines before sharing any videos, images or information.

Quick Tips for Military Family Points of Contact
  • Reach out to parents or guardians of military connected children to offer any assistance the school might be able to provide in support of the student’s success throughout the soldier’s deployment cycle or when a student is experiencing transitions
  • When offering military families supports, please understand that there may be information military families cannot share with you related to deployments
  • Engage in activities which promote a positive school culture and climate for military-connected children, so that they feel appreciated and supported
  • Connect military children and their families with school counselors prior to, during and after deployments. If there is more than one child being impacted by deployments, consider forming supportive teams of students for social and emotional assistance or military family support groups within the school.
  • Become familiar with provisions of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) by clicking here to review a video of professional development.
  • Monitor the Purple Star Award section of the website for Military Family Points of Contact Training, as online professional development and webinar information will be posted to the website.
  • Be aware of resources for military families found on the Common Ground Partnership’s homepage and phone numbers which can get families connected to experts in military family support.
  • Contact Mr. Robert Mellace at the WVDE for assistance by calling 1-833-627-2833 or e-mailing rmellace@k12.wv.us.

Veterans Section of Teach West Virginia

Our nation and West Virginia are experiencing shortages in the number of fully-certified teachers and seeking candidates to pursue careers in education.  Research based upon efforts of the Troops to Teachers Program indicates that veterans are a wonderful source for finding individuals who are diverse and become effective teachers (see, “The Effects of Troops to Teachers on Student Achievement: One State's Study” and, “Troops to Teachers Update: Changing, but Still Pleasing Principals With High Teaching Quality” and, “Troops to Teachers Grant Study 4: Technical Report” studies). The WVDE recognizes that the military is comprised of individuals who represent a wide variety of professional expertise areas and many veterans exemplify values and leadership qualities conducive to helping students become prepared for success in the workforce. Since veterans participate in acts of selfless service to the public while in the military, a new way of serving the public could be attractive to them while in service part-time as a Reserve or National Guard soldier or upon receiving an honorable discharge and retiring as an active-duty soldier.

If you know a veteran in your community who would make a great educator, please ask them to visit the veterans section of the Teach West Virginia website to learn about the requirements for teaching as a substitute or full-time educator at https://teachwv.com/become-a-teacher/military/.
