Our Funder Showcase
Michael Kenig
Vice Chairman, Holder Construction

"I respect the people who have the knowledge, the skills, the desire, and the ability to get things done but I think it's important to care. I'm most motivated by working with other people who care."

A man of many hats, Mike Kenig has dedicated his career to making a difference in the construction industry and in workforce development advocacy. In his role as Vice Chairman of Holder Construction Company, Mike leads with care and passion. Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, Mike has worked with Holder since he graduated from Purdue University. A true problem-solver and process thinker, he is drawn to the most complex challenges and works hard to help overcome barriers within workforce development.

Holder Construction is more than just a builder; they work with industry partners to help integrate skilled training, advanced education, and job creation opportunities to ultimately increase access to a living wage. As Holder celebrates 60 years of being in business this year, Mike shares the company philosophy that asks, “What are we doing to help make the industry better? What are we doing to help make our community better?” Holder continues to champion its broader community by providing support to local workforce development initiatives, scholarships, and construction management programs across the US.

In addition to his involvement with many other nonprofit organizations and trade associations, Mike represents Holder on our Leadership Council providing invaluable guidance and support to help fulfill the mission of Atlanta CareerRise. Mike is a well-respected thought leader and actively engages with many of our projects always informing our work with the “employers voice”. Mike’s motivation and passion for service resonates with one of his favorite quotes by Theodore Roosevelt: “People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Promoting Economic Mobility Through Systems Change
The current COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the racial and geographic workforce disparities stifling shared prosperity across the Atlanta region. In 2019, Atlanta CareerRise (ACR) was awarded the “Promoting Economic Mobility through Systems Change” grant funded by the Ballmer Foundation and implemented through the National Fund for Workforce Solutions (NFWS). For the past 18-months, ACR has worked with WorkSource Metro Atlanta to achieve these objectives:
  • Apply a race, equity, and inclusion data analysis lens to bring focus to how and where workforce training services and supports are deployed across the entire region
  • Facilitate development of a uniform application and eligibility process informed by human-centered design process, and
  • Increase the capacity of the nonprofit provider community to access and connect clients to public funding.
The project is fully engaged in the first two goals and has laid the foundation for the third. The regional website hosted by the Atlanta Regional Commission, www.atlworks.org, now provides a consistent and accessible access point for metro residents to access WIOA training services while data analysis is guiding local area policies and practice that address race, gender, and geography disparities. This work was highlighted in the latest MAIP Webinar available here.
