MAIP Update Webinar Recap

Several months ago, five Metro Atlanta organizations joined forces to launch two-linked councils aimed at aligning our regional workforce efforts. The Industry Council includes 20-30 diverse employers that represent high-demand industries in Metro Atlanta and Georgia. The Workforce Council includes up to 50 workforce professionals who regularly engage businesses as a part of their day-to-day role. These two-linked councils meet to collaborate and take regional action on workforce needs, programs and services. The councils are led by Atlanta CareerRise and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Georgia Business Leaders United, ProsperGeorgia and WorkSource Metro Atlanta.

On November 11, 12 and 13th, 2020 the councils held three virtual employer forums. Each 90-minute forum featured a dialogue with employers and workforce about priorities and opportunities for collaboration around three themes.

Today’s MAIP Webinar featured a “Community Share Out” of the forums including highlights, findings, and recommendations along with a panel discussion featuring John Helton (Atlanta CareerRise), Rob Garcia (Business Leaders United) and Alex Camardelle (Prosper Georgia). A summary of the forum findings and today’s discussion are included below.
  • Theme 1: Back to Work, Fully Engaged and Productive
    • Top Opportunity – Workforce can help best by supporting employers in getting qualified people into jobs and back to work.
  • Theme 2: Workforce in the Next Few Years
    • Top Opportunity – Workforce can assist by offering Career Prep/Training Programs that “sell” high demand jobs, leverage methods like apprenticeship and learning technologies that give participants a realistic preview of the job and provide “work-ready” candidates from diverse communities. Employers are hopeful that workforce partners will assist with broad candidate sourcing and funding and are open to partnership.
  • Theme 3: Ensuring a Future Workforce
    • Top Opportunity – Workforce can help by bringing early career awareness and education efforts to the regional level, helping employers engage in an efficient & effective way.
The councils will reconvene in early 2021 to determine priorities and goals. A full report on forum findings will be available in January. For more information about the Industry Workforce Councils, please contact jhelton@unitedwayatlanta.org .
