FMTV T380 Advanced Lighting class visits Expressway Cinema Rentals
Words from Department Head Karin Kelly

Spring is always an active time in Cinema & Television. Once the local weather begins to cooperate the UCross basement seems to awaken with renewed energy and anticipation. But that energy began returning this term, as we continued to reboot so much of what was sidelined for the past two years. TV Series and all production classes were back in person and Senior Projects began shooting at the start of the term. Safety protocols remain in place for all, but production is happening. We are especially happy about the return of the Senior Show on Saturday, June 11, and the re-launch of Drexel in Los Angeles. FMTV Alumna Liz Kitchens has returned to work her LA internship magic and TVMM Alumnus Michael Gaskins (profiled below) has stepped in this year to supervise the summer portion of the program. And of course, we are eagerly working to lock down some dates for our much-missed Alumni gatherings.
I'm also proud to announce an important initiative that our CINETV DEI Committee developed in conjunction with the student group Project Unfiltered. This year Seniors will be eligible to apply for our new Storytelling Grant, which has been created to support work that reflects inclusive, diverse, and representative storytelling. We anticipate helping several filmmakers to complete their films.
Zoom continued to deliver an impressive slate of professionals who remotely joined our winter Speaker Series. Read below for highlights of who visited. We'll be back at it for spring term. This series is open to all past and present CINETV students, so feel free to join us any Wednesday evening. Scheduled guests are announced ahead of time on Instagram (@drexelcinetv). And if you have a connection to a potential guest, we’d love to hear about them.
There is much to celebrate and be grateful for as we regain our footing in the CINETV community. But I recognize that we do so now with the understanding that our celebratory moments are occurring concurrently with the crisis unfolding in Ukraine. Troubling times like this test the fragile ties that unite us as global citizens but can also encourage frank discussions that offer the chance to learn from each other. I hope that the next time I write the world will be in a better place. Until then speak freely and stay healthy.

Best,
Karin

Television & Media Management

The Paul F. Harron Graduate Program in Television & Media Management (TVMM) welcomes Rachel Casey, MSI to its team of talented faculty members. Rachel will be co-teaching TVMN 780 Media Research Lab alongside Program Director Michelle McHugh in the spring 2021-22 quarter.

Rachel holds an MSI in Library & Information Science from Drexel University and has over six years of experience working in libraries and coordinating public library programs including film screening research and coordination, filmmaker visits, lectures, and concerts. Her knowledge specific to the study of information-intensive projects, technology, and data organization brings a robust skillset to the leadership of this research-focused course in the Television & Media Management Master’s Curriculum.

“I am excited to work alongside Rachel in the classroom, both on campus and online,” said Michelle. “Her knowledge of in-person and virtual library resources, her deep understanding of tools and platforms designed to organize data, and her passion for research, make her an incredible resource for our graduate students.”

Rachel is no stranger to the TVMM Program, as she works full-time as the Administrative & Communications Coordinator for the Department of Cinema & Television, which oversees the TVMM Program.
