Keeping Active in the Winter

Did you know that 60 minutes of active movement for youth every day and two and half hours each week for adults can increase bone strength, improve heart health, and encourage better sleep? Don’t let the winter weather keep you from good health, get going with these indoor movement tips:

  1. Every Active Minute Counts - Don't think “exercise”; any type of movement that gets your heart pumping and your cheeks pink counts. Get creative- dance, march, climb stairs, hop during commercials, they all count!
  2. Break It Up - Break up the time into 2-, 10-, 20-, or 30-minutes chunks, spread out during the day. Set an alarm to take a 10-minute active break every hour.
  3. Stretch It Out - Stretching and yoga are important to prevent injury, build muscle strength, and increase coordination all while promoting relaxation
  4. Try Something New - There are lots of free online videos and resources for at home fitness and movement classes. Keep trying until you find something you like!

DORNSIFE CENTER COMMUNITY GARDEN

Another Big Year for the Dornsife Center Garden: 2020 Yields & Impacts
After the announcement that the Dornsife Center would be closed to the public for COVID-19 safety protocol, Trellis For Tomorrow and the Dornsife Center refined their agreement to proceed with the garden under the sole care of Trellis. The garden did surprisingly well through the circumstances of COVID-19. A number of important connections were made for the future of the garden, including with student groups, community members, and local food justice activists. Efforts will be refined looking towards 2021.

2020 Yields & Impacts

Pounds harvested – 2020: 1,180
Pounds donated – 2020: 1,180
Donation rate: 100%
Estimated meal impact: 4,720
Pounds harvested to date: 9,884
Pounds donated to date: 8,923
Meal Impact to date: 39,537

With 100% of the produce grown at Dornsife being donated to neighbors, 2020 was an impactful year for the garden and the dedicated staff and residents who tend it. We estimate that the donated produce from Dornsife had a positive impact on more than 4,700 meals for children and their families in the surrounding neighborhoods. In 2021, Trellis will continue to work closely with the Dornsife Center and community partners to make connections with people who struggle with food access and to refine efforts to help the Dornsife Center Garden and neighbors of the garden flourish.
