The Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life stands with our students at the University of Connecticut in condemning all antisemitic and hateful acts that have targeted our community over the past year.
The recent attacks aimed at Jewish students have a particularly odious character that is fraught with frightening symbolism. The swastika is a symbol of terror and hate that evokes Nazi persecution of the Jews. It continues to be used to this day by neo-Nazis, white nationalists, and other hate groups who wish to see the extermination of the Jewish people and the marginalization of minorities.
Vile forms of hatred once unleashed do not simply disappear overnight; in fact, repeated use of symbols and words of hate will continue to grow over time if not confronted and condemned. Hate speech leads to acts of hate. Vile words and symbols lead to violence.
It is one thing to teach our students about the long history of antisemitism around the world and in this country; it is altogether different and real when they become the targets of such hatred. We have been dedicated to teaching classes and organizing public and online programs that further promote these lessons. We join with colleagues in the fight against all forms and manifestations of hatred and discrimination.
The Center for Judaic Studies remains committed to cultivating a harmonious community that takes pride in students of all backgrounds on campus and in our community. We must continue in our vigorous pursuit of social justice and equality. A strong and united stance is vital to creating a campus community where all feel welcome, safe, and secure, and where students, faculty, and staff of all backgrounds, faiths, and places of national origin are celebrated.
