Police standoff at Central NY convenience store ends with gunman dead, police say

Utica, N.Y. — A standoff with police ended Thursday in Utica with a gunman dead, police said.

Officers were called around 1:30 p.m. to a convenience store on the corner of Noyes and York streets for a report of a female victim shot, Utica police spokesman Sgt. Michael Curley said in a news release.

The victim, who was wounded in the midsection, was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, where she required emergency surgery, Curley said. Her condition was not immediately known.

Police received reports that the gunman was still inside the store possibly with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Curley said. With the potential that he was still armed, police did not immediately enter the store, he said.

SWAT members and Herkimer police used a drone to check the store and a robot to enter the store, Curley said.

Police found Jakwon Ramos, 27, of New York City, toward the back of the store and unresponsive, Curley said.

“It was immediately evident that he was deceased of a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Curley said.

Two nearby city schools were locked down during the incident, Curley said.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, Curley said.
