Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse police say the suspect in this weekend’s standoff in the Strathmore neighborhood broke into his mother’s house and later fought with her and punched her before refusing to leave.

Jarvis Washington’s mom had a full order of protection against him when he broke in and fell asleep on her couch, Syracuse police spokesman Lt. Matthew Malinowski said.

When the mom found her 35-year-old son in her home Saturday morning, they argued and Washington punched his mom, Malinowski said.

Washington’s mother called 911.

Syracuse police responded at around 9:30 a.m., but Washington refused to leave. Police were told Washington may have a knife inside the home at 910 Bellevue Ave., officials said at the time.

Negotiators repeatedly tried to get Washington to exit the home by offering to let him speak to his father. They stressed that no one wanted to hurt him and they could not leave until he came out of the house.

The mother was able to get out of the home.

The standoff lasted more than four hours, bringing nearly a dozen police cars, a K-9 unit, long guns and a negotiator to Bellevue Avenue.

Police were eventually able to enter the home and arrested Washington.

Syracuse police charged Washington with first-degree criminal contempt, second-degree burglary, second-degree menacing, fourth-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree harassment. He was sent to the Onondaga County Justice Center. He remained in jail Monday night.

Washington is scheduled to answer the charges Friday in Syracuse City Court, jail records show.
