Syracuse, N.Y. — Kayla Treanor is going right into the fire in her second season as head coach of the Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team.
Syracuse opens the 2023 season on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the JMA Wireless Dome against Northwestern in a rematch of last year’s NCAA tournament quarterfinals. Syracuse lost to Northwestern 15-4. The Wildcats went on to the Final Four.
The Maryland Terrapins visit the JMA Wireless Dome on Friday, Feb. 17. Maryland was also a national semifinalist last season.
Syracuse ends the regular season with a road game against defending national champion North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Saturday, April 15, and a home contest against last year’s national runner-up, Boston College, on Thursday, April 20.
The Orange will face nine teams that competed in last season’s NCAA tournament.
Syracuse will return a number of key contributors, highlighted by graduate student attack Meaghan Tyrrell.
Tyrrell, a Tewaaraton finalist in 2022, had 111 points (78 goals, 33 assists) last season, marking the second-straight year she’s surpassed the 100-point mark. She enters the 2023 season ranked sixth on Syracuse’s career points leader list with 308 and was named the No. 1 player on Inside Lacrosse’s list of the Top 50 players for 2023.
Also making the Top 50 list for Syracuse were grad student attack Megan Carney (49), senior midfielder/draw Katelyn Mashewske (35) and senior midfield Emma Tyrrell (24).
Tyrrell, the younger of the Tyrrell sisters on SU’s roster, posted 30 goals and 20 assists along with 64 draw controls before suffering an ACL injury after 12 games last season. She earned first-team, All-ACC honors.
Carney finished fourth on the team in scoring (48 points) despite missing five games due to injury.
Syracuse will also get attack Emma Ward back in 2023. Ward missed the 2022 season with a lower-body injury. Ward had a breakout freshman season in 2021 with 73 points (43 goals, 30 assists).
Treanor posted a 15-6 record last season in her debut as Orange head coach.
