Second person dies in fatal Clay house fire, family says

Clay, N.Y. — An 8-year-old girl has died and two other people have been hospitalized after a home caught on fire in Clay Tuesday night, deputies said.

A man is in critical condition and another child is in stable condition at Upstate University Hospital, said Sgt. Jon Seeber, a spokesman for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

All three were inside 124 Lawdon St. before the fire was reported around 7:38 p.m., Seeber said. The child who survived the fire got out and alerted a neighbor who called 911, he said.

The 8-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, Seeber said. Police did not release names of the man and children Tuesday evening.

Dozens of emergency crew members responded to the fire. It took firefighters about 25 minutes to knock down the flames, Seeber said.

Fire investigators are working to determine the exact cause and origin of the fire, Seeber said.
