Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse football kicker Andre Szmyt will seemingly appear in two post-season showcase bowl games in the early months of 2023.
In the past 24 hours, the Hula Bowl and East-West Shrine Bowl have each shared graphics via Twitter indicating that Szmyt has accepted an invite to play in each of their games.
The Hula Bowl takes place Jan. 14 in Orlando. The Shrine Bowl is played Feb. 4 in Las Vegas.
Both bowl games feature the top college football players in the nation at the end of their careers and heading on to pursue dreams of professional ball.
Szmyt has had a bounce-back season, nailing 16 of 21 field goal attempts with a long of 54 yards this season. He’s also kicked 36 point after attempts and made every one of them. Szmyt is also a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, which he won as a freshman in 2018.
Of the 24 players to have accepted invites to the Shrine Bowl so far, Szmyt is the only kicker. He’s joined by three other ACC members: Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers, Georgia Tech linebacker Charlie Thomas and Louisville defensive back Kei’Trel Clark.
The Hula Bowl does not have a list of players who have accepted invitations on its website.
Szmyt is the second Syracuse player to accept an invitation to a post-season showcase bowl. Last week, left tackle Matthew Bergeron accepted his invite to the Senior Bowl, also in early February.
SU has two games left in its season: the regular-season finale against Boston College this Saturday, and a bowl game sometime in December.
