Washington – U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, vice chair of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, plans to speak at Syracuse University next month.

Cheney, R-Wyoming, will lead a conversation titled “Courage in Defense of Democracy” with students and faculty at 2 p.m. Oct. 3 at SU’s National Veterans Resource Center.

Only students, faculty and staff will be eligible to request tickets to the free event, SU said today. A public livestream feed will be available through SU’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs on the day of the event.

Cheney, 56, the former leader of the House Republican Conference, emerged as former president Donald Trump’s fiercest GOP adversary after she voted to impeach him for inciting the Jan. 6 mob attack on the Capitol.

After her vote, House Republicans voted to strip Cheney of her leadership position. And a Trump-backed GOP primary opponent, Harriet Hageman, easily defeated Cheney in Wyoming’s primary election last month.

Cheney has remained outspoken about Jan. 6 and said her election loss opened a new chapter in her political career. She has hinted that she may run for president in 2024.

“I have said since Jan. 6 that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office — and I mean it,” Cheney said last month.

Cheney, a staunch conservative and daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, has promised to fight Trump’s influence in her party.

Cheney and Central New York Rep. John Katko were among 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump over the Jan. 6 attack.

Katko, R-Camillus, also faced criticism from Trump after his impeachment vote. Katko decided to retire from Congress at the end of the year rather than seek a fifth term in office.
