Buffalo Bills ‘exist in a class of their own’ (Week 3 power rankings)

There is a lot of football left in the 2022-2023 season, but the Buffalo Bills have stood out as the best team in the league through two weeks.

On offense, the team is nearly unstoppable. Buffalo has made a statement with four offensive touchdowns in each of their first two games. The productive has been impressive with Josh Allen making things look easy against two of the best teams in the league one year ago.

Defensively? This team looks better than the unit that finished No. 1 in the league last season. The pass rush is more consistent, the run defense is significantly better and the unit is creating turnovers.

Buffalo has passed their first two tests with relative ease this season, but will play a surprising 2-0 Dolphins team in Week 3. Miami looked well on their way to a blowout loss last week before stunning the Ravens late and showing that they are a legitimate playoff contender this season.

Going to Miami on a short week will not be easy, but if Buffalo is as good as they appear to be the team could make another statement this Sunday.

Heading into Week 3, here is where the Bills find themselves on various power rankings.

ESPN: No. 1 (No change)

Analysis:

Biggest early adjustment: Improve the running backs production

Quarterback Josh Allen finished the Bills’ season opener as the team’s leading rusher. In the second game against the Titans, Buffalo struggled to pick up first downs in short-yardage situations. This Buffalo offense has high potential, there’s no doubt about that, but an inability to get the running game going was an issue at times for the Bills last year. They don’t need Devin Singletary to have 20-plus carries a game, but this offense could be even harder to stop if it was able to get consistent production from its running backs.

Sports Illustrated: No. 1 (No change)

Analysis:

It’s scary how routine the Bills are absolutely disposing of excellent NFL teams and really good opposing coordinators. The win over the Titans was another exclamation point. The challenge now is to evolve, for when someone finally figures out how to stop you.

Pro Football Talk: No. 1 (No change)

Analysis:

An unexpectedly huge test is looming in Miami. It’s hard to see them not passing it.

Yahoo: No. 1 (No change)

Analysis:

The Bills have been nearly perfect to start the season. They really could have the best offense and best defense in the NFL this season.

CBS Sports: No. 1 (No change)

Analysis:

They left no doubt Monday night against the Titans as to who the best team is right now. But now they face a tough road test at Miami on a short week. That won’t be easy.

NFL.com: No. 1 (No change)

Analysis:

Monday night’s 41-7 pasting of the Titans was another loud message to the NFL that the measuring stick for all teams can be found in Western New York. Josh Allen threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns in just three quarters of work, while Stefon Diggs piled up 12 catches for 148 yards and three scores ... also in just three quarters of work. Throw in a Matt Milano pick-six and a wall of blue surrounding Derrick Henry every time the Titans back touched the ball, and, well, this was as pure a distillation of dominance as we might see all season. Two weeks in, and the Bills exist in a class of their own.

Bleacher Report: No. 1 (No change)

Analysis:

If there was any doubt that the Buffalo Bills belonged in the top spot in these power rankings, those doubts were pounded into goo Monday night—right along with the Tennessee Titans.

Mind you, this wasn’t some beatdown of an overmatched tomato can—or at least it wasn’t supposed to be. Last year, the Tennessee Titans won 12 games and were the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

They were no match for Buffalo’s juggernaut.

Offensively, the Bills piled up 414 yards of offense, with 317 of those coming courtesy of Josh Allen’s right arm. Allen threw four touchdown passes, including three to star wideout Stefon Diggs.

Defensively, the Bills surrendered just 187 yards of offense and 12 first downs. Derrick Henry was limited to less than two yards per carry. Buffalo sacked Ryan Tannehill twice, picked him off twice and just didn’t allow anything through the air or on the ground.

“I’m not going to sit here and say the Bills are unbeatable,” Davenport said. “But I’m not not saying it either. The Bills have played two teams that both made the playoffs last season (including the defending Super Bowl champions) and beat those teams by a combined score of 72-17. Good luck Miami—you’re going to need it.”
