Committing to Texas A&M? Transferring to George Washington? Howard Triche tells the story of his Syracuse career

Syracuse, N.Y. ― Howard Triche’s career as a basketball player at Syracuse seems like a fairy tale.

Local kid who stays home, becomes a starter and later a senior captain on the Syracuse team that advanced all the way to the 1987 NCAA championship game.

But Triche’s story could have been much different. In an appearance on the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast, Triche explained how he initially wanted to get out of Syracuse. Rick Pitino recruited him ― to play at Boston University.

Triche verbally committed to Texas A&M. He remembered a conversation with Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim about how Texas A&M planned to use him as a point guard.

He stayed at home to play for Syracuse, but almost left two years later. He was ready to transfer to George Washington, but a trip to Europe changed his mind. And Boeheim’s, too.

Triche tells those stories and more, including his memories of Pearl Washington, Rony Seikaly’s DJ studio and the 1987 NCAA tournament run.
