2nd family member dies after swimming mishap in Upstate lake; sister in critical condition

Bethel, N.Y. — An uncle who attempted to rescue his nephew from a Sullivan County lake this weekend has died, troopers said Tuesday.

Afrid Haider, 34, had dived into White Lake to try to rescue Basir Amin, 18, who was seen struggling in deep water at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday, State Police said in a news release.

Amin’s sister, Nasrin Amin, 21, also tried to rescue the teen, troopers said.

All three went under the water and did not resurface, police said. They were recovered by divers from the Bethel Fire Department, police said.

Life-saving measures started immediately, troopers said. They were taken to Garnet Medical in Harris, where Basir Amin was pronounced dead, troopers said.

Haider has died, troopers announced Tuesday.

Nasrin Amin is still in critical condition, they said.
