Deputies identify body recovered from depths of Canandaigua lake

Canandaigua Lake, N.Y. -- A 61-year-old man who went missing in Canandaigua Lake several days ago was recovered Monday, deputies said.

Kirk D. Hobbs, of Laurelton in Queens, was reported missing after he entered the lake from a boat and never resurfaced around 1:40 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.

Hobbs was visiting family in the area and was boating with relatives when he went missing, deputies said. The man was not wearing any personal floatation equipment when he went under, they said.

An extensive search began on Friday but there was no sign of Hobbs in the water or on the shore until much later that evening, deputies said.

Around 7:30 p.m., six hours after the man was reported missing, a State Police boat equipped with a sonar located a “target of interest”, deputies said.

Due to the depth of the target, special divers and equipment were needed to make the recovery, deputies said. Those divers and the equipment were not available until Monday.

Around 1 p.m. Monday, Hobbs’s body was recovered from a depth of around 170 feet of water, deputies said.

His body was taken to Geneva General Hospital for an autopsy to determine his exact cause of death, deputies said.
