Syracuse, N.Y. — Some of the top amateur golfers in New York are returning to Onondaga Golf and Country Club in Fayetteville this week for the 99th annual New York State Golf Championship.

The event runs Tuesday through Thursday with more than 140 golfers competing for the Ganson Depew Cup.

The field includes defending champion James Allen, who is entering his junior year on the men’s golf team at Penn State.

Also in the field is Anthony Maglisco, a Section III Class B champion out of Westhill, and Le Moyne’s Nick Bove is a player to watch after shooting the low round of 63 in his first-round qualifier.

The championship begins with two rounds of 18 holes on Tuesday and Wednesday. The top-40 golfers plus ties, and any player within 10 strokes of the lead, will make the cut to Thursday, when they will play 36 holes. In the event of a tie after 72 holes, a sudden-death playoff will follow.

The NYS Amateur was last hosted by Onondaga in 1961.
